AMCHAM Forges Strategic Partnership with Suwon Special City to Boost Economic Collaboration and U.S. Investment

AMCHAM signs MOU with Suwon Special City as part of mission to establish Korea as the top business Hub in Asia, 

fostering economic collaboration and attracting more American investment

The signing ceremony featured a delegation from AMCHAM, including AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, Qualcomm Technologies Inc. Senior Vice President and President of Asia-Pacific (APAC) O.H. Kwon, Applied Materials Korea Country Manager Park Gwang-sun, and Lam Research Korea Managing Director Jung Sung-rak.

The MOU signing and accompanying special meeting cemented that the two organizations will actively collaborate to support economic cooperation and investment attraction activities of Suwon Special City and promote cooperation between U.S. and Korean companies in Suwon. Moreover, the two organizations are committed to further extending their multifaceted collaboration in areas where mutual cooperation is required.

With this MOU, AMCHAM has taken a significant step towards its mission of establishing South Korea as the premier business hub in the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, this partnership with Suwon Special City represents a notable milestone as AMCHAM enters into its third regional agreement with a local government in South Korea, following the one established with Incheon and Paju city.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Suwon Special City, home to leading global companies, plays a significant economic role in Korea and is continually striving to become a hub for high-tech industries including biotechnology.” He added, “AMCHAM will continue to play a major role as a bridge between the U.S. and Korean governments and business communities, and we will do our best to support Suwon in attracting more FDI to the city.”

Suwon Special City Mayor Lee Jae-joon said, “I firmly believe that the future of Suwon Special City holds immense potential through our economic collaboration with AMCHAM and its member companies, who lead high-tech industries on a global scale.” He emphasized, “I am dedicated to transforming Suwon Special City into a place of great promise for American companies with significant support from AMCHAM.”

Going forward, the two organizations will identify specific mutual cooperation measures, attract investment from American companies by strengthening the network with AMCHAM and its member companies, and support economic cooperation and investment attraction.

주한미국상공회의소, 수원특례시와 경제협력 및 미국 기업 투자 활성화 위한 상호협력 양해각서 체결

美 기업의 투자 유치 촉진 및 경제협력 지원 통해 한국의 아·태지역 제1의 비즈니스 허브 미션 실현 가속화

이날 협약식에는 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사를 비롯해 권오형 퀄컴 본사 수석 부사장 겸 아태지역 총괄 사장, 박광선 어플라이드 머티리얼즈 코리아 사장 겸 지역 총괄책임자, 정성락 램리서치코리아 부사장이 참석해 협약의 의미를 더했다.

본 협약을 통해 양 기관은 앞으로 긴밀한 협력체계를 바탕으로 미국 기업의 투자 유치 활동을 촉진함과 동시에 나아가 수원 지역 內 한·미 기업 간 협력 증진을 위한 노력을 약속했다. 이 밖에도 상호 협조가 필요한 분야에서 다양한 협력을 이어갈 예정이다.

암참의 이번 수원특례시와의 MOU는 인천시, 파주시에 이어 암참이 한국 지방 정부와 체결한 세 번째 협약으로, 이번 MOU를 통해 암참은 대한민국을 아·태지역 제1의 비즈니스 허브로 부상케 하고자 하는 미션 실현에 한 걸음 더 다가갔다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는, “삼성전자로 대표되는 세계적 글로벌 기업들이 둥지를 틀고 있는 수원특례시는 한국 경제에 있어 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있으며, 생명공학을 비롯한 첨단산업 분야의 글로벌 허브로 발돋움하기 위해 지속적으로 노력하고 있다.”라고 말했다. 그는 이어, “암참은 앞으로도 한·미 양국 정부와 재계간 연결고리가 되어 핵심적인 역할을 이어 나감은 물론, 수원이 더 많은 FDI (외국인직접투자)를 유치할 수 있도록 다방면으로 적극 지원해 나가겠다.”고 덧붙였다.

이재준 수원특례시장은 “전 세계 경제를 선도하는 첨단 기업들이 함께하는 주한미국상공회의소가 수원시의 기업 유치에 가교가 될 것.” 이라며, “이번 협약이 수원시와 암참 모두를 상생하게 하는 길이 될 것으로 기대한다.” 고 말했다. 이어, “앞으로 암참과 끈끈한 협력으로 수원시가 미국 기업들에게 기대의 땅이 될 수 있도록 최선의 노력을 하겠다.” 고 덧붙였다.

향후 양 기관은 구체적인 상호 협력 방안을 마련하고, 암참 및 소속 회원사와의 네트워크 강화를 통한 미 기업의 투자유치 촉진, 경제협력 및 투자유치 지원을 도모해 나갈 예정이다.
