(한글은 아래 참조)SEOUL, February 9, 2015 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) and the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) jointly hosted a business roundtable luncheon with Antony Blinken, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, at the Lotte Hotel in Sogong Dong on February 9, 2015.Deputy Secretary Blinken, on his first overseas trip since taking office in January of 2015, is expected to travel also to China and Japan following his visit to Korea. AMCHAM General Membership Meeting with the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Penny Pritzker

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) and Korea International Trade Association (KITA) co-hosted a lunch meeting with the Honorable Penny Pritzker, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, at the JW Marriott Dongdaemun on October 23, 2014.This is Secretary Pritzker’s first trade mission to Asia since she took the office in July 2013. Secretary Pritzker expected continued and expanded mutual cooperation between the US and Korea. She also stated that U.S. businesses will help the deepening of commercial ties between the U.S. and Asia through the trade mission. In the meeting, Secretary Pritzker discussed Korea’s economic outlook and the U.S.-Korea economic relationship. She also advised on successful public-private partnerships which is essential strategy for a creative economy in Korea. She said entrepreneurship and innovation is significant for nation’s development and recommended what the government can do for stimulating innovative technology and creative ideas. AMCHAM Hosts “The 5th AMCHAM Innovation Camp” at Kangwon National University

American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) held “the 5th AMCHAM Innovation Camp” at Kangwon National University on September 22 (Shin Seung-Ho, the President of Kangwon National University). Following the footsteps of prior Innovation Camps which were held in great success, AMCHAM helped promote the global competitiveness of the bright youth in Kangwon-do by arranging the meeting where the students can directly meet the CEOs and senior executives of leading U.S. companies. Marking the fifth event this year, AMCHAM Innovation Camp is aimed at boosting regional economy and encouraging students with building their careers through the lectures from the CEOs of multinational corporates. Amy Jackson, President of AMCHAM, emphasized that “These Innovation Camps are one of the most popular events sponsored by AMCHAM. We, AMCHAM and our members, have focused on giving back to the Korean society through diverse CSR activities. I am very delighted and confident that the innovation camps provide a unique opportunity for Korean youth to hear directly from CEOs and senior executives of leading global companies in Korea. We hope this valuable experience will help them strengthen their global competitiveness and encourage them to aim higher in their careers.”This year’s Innovation Camp was consisting of two separate sessions. It provided useful information as to what kind of people do multinational companies want through lectures led by CEOs and the group mentoring sessions. Also, participating students were given a booklet that has information about internship programs in some U.S. companies in Korea.During the opening remarks, Shirley Yu-Tsui, Chairwoman of the AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future (ACIF), said, “To be successful today, first of all, young people need to have a better grasp of themselves and what they truly want. We also want you to have the “Wild Ducks” spirit, dauntlessly challenging and trying new things without fear.” Furthermore, she also stated that “ten years from now on, there comes the generation of “creating” the jobs, unlike my days of “searching” for jobs. While today’s diverse occupations will vanish, new jobs would emerge. Therefore, today’s youth need to be more creative and innovative.”In Session 1(CEO lectures), Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of Partners for the Future Foundation (AMCHAM’s charity foundation) and Attorney at Law of Kim & Chang, hosted the special CEO lectures. Shirley Yu-Tsui, General Manager of IBM Korea and Chairwoman of AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future (ACIF); Jeong-Taik Rim, President of DuPont Korea; and H.S. Lee, President of Intel Korea, gave invaluable lectures regarding the conditions for global competitiveness, preparations for employment in global companies and the leadership qualities based on their personal experiences. In Session 2 (mentoring session), each of the nine CEOs and senior executives from leading U.S. companies (including Chairwoman Shirley Yu-Tsui and President Jeong-Taik Rim who gave CEO lectures) were assigned to a group of students and had a speech and a Q&A session on the qualification of potential global employees. AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar 2014

(한글은 아래 참조)Seoul, July 11, 2014 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the fifth “AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar 2014” on Friday, July 11th at the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul. At this event, representatives from foreign pharmaceutical companies and officials from various institutions including Ministry of Health and Welfare, CBfez, Celgene, KRPIA, Pfizer, Baxter, Boston Scientific, Cook Medical, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson Medical, Lilly Medtronic, MSD, and Novartis, came together to discuss opportunities of health technology. Among the main participants of this event were H.E. Chun-Jin Kim, Member of the National Assembly, Republic of Korea, the Hon. Sung Kim, the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, and Amy Jackson, President of AMCHAM Korea. In addition, H.E. Hyung-Pyo Moon, Minister of Health and Welfare and Keon W. Kang, Professor at Seoul National University College of Medicine talked upon “Prospects and Opportunities of Health Technology to 2030.” Throughout his speech, Professor Kang touched upon six Global Megatrends: Ageing, Cyber-world, Globalization, Polarization, Global warming and Resource depletion, and also highlighted Science & Technology vision for the future. The main discussions in the afternoon were divided into two sessions A and B. In session A, Kee-taig Jung, President of Korea Health Industry Development Institute, moderated the dialogue on strategies to establish healthcare as a rising growth engine in Asia. Lee Suk Kyu, Director of Division of Welfare Review & Benefits Rights at Ministry of Health and Welfare, began a heated panel discussion on the Korean government’s policy direction for promotion of Korea’s health industry. In contrast, Hidehito Sekino, Director of Health Policy Bureau at the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, gave an overview on the Japanese Pharmaceutical Industry and mentioned Japan’s Revitalization Strategy to extend the nation’s “healthy life expectancy.” Huang San-Kuei, Director General of National Health Insurance Administration in Taiwan, navigated the current status of Healthcare Insurance System in Taiwan, and predicted the new era of Healthcare Innovation.In Session B, Sung Min Kim, Professor at the Department of Medical Biotechnology at Dongguk University, initiated multiple dialogues on the growth opportunities through open innovation and global collaboration between local and global medical device manufacturers. Five presenters, each representing government institutions and foreign pharmaceutical companies, followed up on Professor Kim’s keynote speech. AMCHAM Hosts a Business Roundtable with the U.S. President Barack Obama

(Photo Courtesy of White House) (한글은 아래 참조)SEOUL, April 26, 2014 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted U.S. President Barack Obama for a roundtable business event on April 26 at the Grand Hyatt Seoul to discuss investment opportunities in the United States and implementation of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA). The meeting with the President was preceded by a robust discussion with Michael Froman, United States Trade Representative, and Caroline Atkinson, Deputy National Security Advisor. President Obama met with a small number of American business executives doing business in Korea, prominent Korean business leaders making investments in the United States, and leaders of Korean business associations, all of which have long been advocates of increased U.S.-Korea trade and investment.? The participants discussed various topics including implementation of the KORUS FTA, ways to further promote trade and investment between the United States and Korea, and views of Korean investors in the United States.President Obama said, “What we want to underscore is the fact that as important as the security relationship and alliances between the Republic of Korea and the United States are, what is also important is the incredible and growing economic ties that are creating jobs and opportunities in both countries.”He also stated, “Under the KORUS FTA, our trade has increased… American companies are exporting more to Korea and Korean companies are exporting more to the United States, so it is a win-win for both countries. AMCHAM Hosts “The 4th AMCHAM Innovation Camp” at the University of Seoul

(한글은 아래 참조)April 8, 2014 (SEOUL) ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the fourth “AMCHAM Innovation Camp” at the University of Seoul on April 8, 2014. As in previous camps, AMCHAM sought to give greater job opportunities to Korea’s youth by providing students with career advice on how to be better prepared for the global job market and to work in multinational companies. The three-hour “Innovation Camp” was comprised of lectures and mentoring sessions which were led by nine CEOs and senior executives of leading U.S. companies in Korea. The nine “mentors” delivered valuable advice including on what skills and backgrounds multi-national companies look for when they hire. Participating students were also given a booklet that held information about internship programs in some U.S. companies in Korea. During his remarks, James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman and Country Manager of Microsoft Korea said, “We firmly believe that the future of Korea lies on the global competitiveness of the young generation. We also believe that Korea’s youth can lead the global community in the areas of their expertise if they continuously challenge themselves and improve their skills. That is why we CEOs of foreign companies are devoting our valuable time to meet with you and share our global experiences. "Dr. Kun Lee, President of University of Seoul, welcomed the senior executives of American companies who participated as mentors. He expressed his gratitude and said, “Thank you for sharing your time and advice with the students and providing a rare opportunity for the students to meet with CEOs and senior executives of foreign companies.” Furthermore, he sent words of encouragement to the students by stating that “with Korea’s heightened stature in today’s global society, expectations towards Korea’s youth are also increasing. I hope the advices given today will greatly help all of you in becoming global leaders.”In Session 1 (CEO lectures), James Kim; Shirley Yu-Tsui, Chairwoman of AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future (ACIF) and General Manager of IBM Korea; and H.S. Lee, President of Intel Korea, took the podium to share their personal experiences regarding conditions for global competitiveness, preparations for employment in global companies and leadership qualities. Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of Partners for the Future Foundation (AMCHAM’s charity foundation) and Attorney at Law of Kim & Chang, emceed the special lectures.Speaking on leadership, Shirley Yu-Tsui said that, “True leadership is measured by the influence that you have over those around you, and you can only effectively influence others when you are equipped with the right expertise and skills, and a willingness to lead others by example, and not by coercion. Only when you do this will others follow you from their heart and you will start to build a good team. Ms. Yu-Tsui was named General Manager of IBM Korea in January 2013. Prior to this role, Ms. Yu-Tsui was the Managing Partner for IBM Global Business Services (GBS), Greater China Group which includes China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, responsible for leading IBM’s consulting and systems integration business across the Region. With 30 years of experience in the information technology industry, Ms. Yu-Tsui is recognized for her leadership and various contributions. She was also responsible for the PWCC acquisition in Asia Pacific as the Executive Integration in 2002. Noting that AMCHAM celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2013 and is looking forward to another fruitful 60 years, Chairman Kim further highlighted AMCHAM looks at 2014 as the "Year of CREATE" (Co-prosperity and Revitalization of Korea's economy can be achieved when we All strive Together) and underlined three key messages that underscore the role that U.S. companies have played in Korea, and encapsulate AMCHAM's focus and plans for 2014. The three key points were:1) AMCHAM and its members are proud to be good and actively contributing corporate citizens of Korea, including creating many jobs;2) AMCHAM is a good partner to Korea, being its best cheerleader;3) AMCHAM actively and substantively contributes to making the Korean economy more creative.First, Chairman Kim emphasized that AMCHAM members are good corporate citizens of Korea who fully comply with Korean laws and regulations, employ tens of thousands of Korean workers, and give back to the Korean society in diverse ways, utilizing their unique areas of expertise. "AMCHAM members have continuously put a high priority on giving back to Korean society. For example, in the aftermath of Asian Financial Crisis, AMCHAM established the Partners for the Future Foundation in 2000 and has provided scholarships to Korean university students from disadvantaged families. The Foundation has since raised over 14 billion won for scholarships allowing over 2,100 Korean students to attend local universities," said Chairman Kim.Chairman Kim also stressed that, "AMCHAM member companies are strong supporters of equal opportunities for female Korean employees, because U.S. companies believe that skills and attitude should define an employee rather than gender."Second, Chairman Kim highlighted that AMCHAM is Korea's best advocate, partner, and cheerleader as it seeks every opportunity to promote Korea, including to potential U.S. investors."AMCHAM was instrumental in Korea's inclusion in the U.S. Waiver Program in 2008, upgrading Korea's Foreign Military Sales (FMS) status to NATO + 4 status, and getting the KORUS FTA ratified and implemented. In 2014, one of our priorities will be to work to ensure that the KORUS FTA is fully implemented and that the expected benefits of the agreement accrue to both the Korean and U.S. economies," said Chairman Kim. Chairman Kim also underscored that "U.S. companies also put a high priority on procuring from and partnering with a large number Korean SMEs and will foster and encourage more win-win partnerships between Korean and U.S. companies through its many events and seminars this year."Last, he underlined the optimism that AMCHAM along with its members share for the future of the Korean economy, underscoring various points made by President Park Geun-hye during the luncheon with leaders of the foreign business community on January 9th."Competition for foreign direct investment has never been fiercer, especially in Asia, and Korea has many attractive features including its well-educated and talented workforce. If Korea can further deregulate and adopt new, concrete policies to encourage a more creative economy, Korea will be able to create another "Miracle on the Han," said Chairman Kim. "In light of this, we were greatly encouraged during our meeting with President Park Geun-hye last week, when the President announced that the government will seek increased interaction with stakeholders when designing new policies."Chairman Kim concluded his speech by introducing the key ingredients for more foreign investment to the country and highlighted AMCHAM's support for the Korean government in this initiative."We hope that Korea will continue to pursue a strong system that provides adequate reward for innovation and protection of intellectual property rights (IPR). Further, it is important that new polices are developed and implemented in a fair and transparent manner that involves input from all stakeholders, and that ensures follow up measures to ensure that policies are having their desired effect.
