HD Hyundai partners with Google Cloud to build AI platform

By Choi Hyun-jae and Minu Kim, Pulse - South Korea’s HD Hyundai has announced a collaboration with Google Cloud to introduce generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology into its crucial shipbuilding and construction machinery sectors in a move aimed at digital transformation.

On Tuesday, HD Hyundai unveiled its plan to strengthen strategic cooperation with Google Cloud for building its AI platform. Through this partnership, HD Hyundai intends to implement generative AI technology into its core businesses. Generative AI involves creating new content based on existing data such as text, audio, images, and videos. Earlier this month, Google unveiled Gemini, a generative AI model.

Google Cloud is set to provide a range of solutions to HD Hyundai, including Vertex AI?a customizable AI platform embedded with Gemini for businesses. This collaboration positions Google Cloud to accumulate diverse experiences by accumulating relevant data within HD Hyundai’s business sectors. Starting January next year, HD Hyundai and Google Cloud prioritize major tasks such as industry-specific AI solution and service development, enhancing customer digital experiences, fostering AI-based platform development, and nurturing AI experts.

In the shipbuilding business, the Korean company will carry out projects to analyze the status of key personnel in the industry and improve customer response. The company will also focus on improving customer service quality and securing additional sales channels in the construction machinery sector, while the energy sector will implement projects to optimize facility operations.

“The fusion of HD Hyundai’s vast data and Google Cloud’s generative AI technology will create great synergies. We will actively use generative AI in various areas to improve work efficiency and enhance customer satisfaction,” said a company spokesperson.

HD Hyundai initiated its journey toward specialized generative AI development by launching AI Center in January. In July, a pilot project integrating Google’s generative AI service commenced at HD Hyundai Construction Equipment’s call center. In September, collaborations with POSCO on smart unmanned technology development and partnering with Siemens in October for smart shipyard construction further solidified HD Hyundai’s dedication to technological advancements.

At CES 2024, taking place Jan. 9-12, in Las Vegas, Google Cloud’s Vice President Philip Moyer is scheduled to participate as a speaker in HD Hyundai’s session.
