Foreign companies discuss resolving intergenerational tension in workplaceBy Hong Yoo, The Korea Herald - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea and Morgan Phillips Korea co-hosted a webinar Tuesday to discuss generational disparity in the workplace with four CEOs of leading global companies. Speakers across different generations included O.H. Kwon, president of Qualcomm APAC, Robert Wilkinson, managing director of Colliers, Oh Ji-won, country chair of Shell Companies in Korea, and Tyler Joo, marketing director of global brands at AB InBbev. The moderator of the conversation, Christina Ahn, managing director of Morgan Phillips Korea, pointed out some of the differences noticed between young employees and senior employees. She said 6 in 10 baby boomers -- those born 1955-63 in Korea -- think having a good job is a prerequisite to happiness in life, while only 4.4 in 10 of Generation Z -- the youngest people entering the workforce -- agreed. When asked their opinion about hoesik, or company dinners, members of older generations responded that it is necessary for team building while 38 percent of younger people labeled it “a complete waste of time.” “If a company acknowledges differences between generations and addresses them properly, I think this is less of a challenge,” said Joo, the youngest speaker at the webinar. He added that the key to resolving intergenerational conflict in the workplace comes down to understanding how to interact with different generations and what motivates them. AMCHAM Chairman James Kim, who led the conversation, asked the speakers how they define “kkondae,” an expression used in South Korea to describe a condescending, usually older, person. Robert Wilkinson added that “there are young kkondae as well, as young people too, can be inflexible with their views of the world, unwilling to listen and try new things.” “The fastest way to close the gap with Gen Z is by changing myself first,” said Kwon. Communication, transparency and openness were brought up as the solutions to generational disparity during the webinar. “In our company, we have a culture of looking out for one another. Having this overarching culture unifies us and gives opportunity to speak out. We allow intervening regardless of how senior that person one is talking to” said Oh. A: 미·중 갈등으로 더 이상 홍콩에 아시아 지역본부를 둘 수 없었다. 싱가포르도 고려했는데 언론의 자유가 없어 택하지 않았다. 그런 가운데 한류 열풍이 거세지고, 동시에 정보통신기술(ICT) 인프라가 좋다며 한국을 선택했다. 실제 와보니 인터넷 환경이 생각했던 것보다 더 뛰어나다며 만족감을 표시하고 있다. Q: 외국기업 투자 활성화를 위해 한국 정부에 건의할 것은. A: 세금문제다. 보통 법인세 같은 기업 세금만을 생각하는데 더 심각한 것은 개인에 대한 세금이다. 몇몇 미국 기업이 한국에 법인을 세워 유능한 인재를 보내려고 했는데 세금 문제 때문에 안 온 경우가 생각보다 많다고 한다. 특히 한국에 5년 이상 거주할 경우 한국인과 똑같이 과세하는 데 이는 뛰어난 인재와 기업의 한국 행을 막는 안 좋은 조세 제도로 개선돼야 한다.

Korea Times forum proposes global investors' ESG principles By Baek Byung-yeul, The Korea Times - The importance of environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) has greatly expanded as a key facilitator to promote the transformation toward sustainable growth in the post-COVID-19 time.For the sake of sustainable growth, it has become essential to understand global investors' investment principles. From this standpoint, The Korea Times hosted the Global ESG Forum at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) building in central Seoul, Oct. 29, providing an opportunity to discuss key ESG issues and trends among global investors and help them strategize effective ESG tactics. The event was held in cooperation with the KCCI. In accordance with the health authority's quarantines guidelines, only 49 officials working at local companies and global investment institutions attended the event. Korea Times Chairman Seung Myung-ho gave a welcome speech to announce the start of the forum. Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) Governor Jeong Eun-bo delivered an opening speech and Korea Investment Corp. (KIC) CEO Jin Seung-ho gave a keynote speech. "Now is the time to solve social problems through responsible management and more actively implement management that has a positive impact on the environment. ESG, which demands environmental and social responsibility, and sound and transparent management, has become the most important factor in sustainable development beyond the problem of corporate survival," Chairman Seung said. "We've seen that the more environmental and social responsibilities are fulfilled through ESG management, the more positive an effect they can have on corporate performance. To secure sustainable growth engines, companies should make ESG management a more active corporate strategy. I hope today's forum hosted by The Korea Times will serve as an opportunity for domestic companies to come up with more realistic and effective strategies for ESG management." In his opening speech, FSS Governor Jeong stressed that companies should further strengthen their ESG responses, before it is too late to catch up with changing trends, even while the global economy is struggling with uncertainties caused by the prolonged virus pandemic and global supply shortage issues. "Under severe internal and external economic conditions, I think ESG management practices can be a big burden on companies. Nevertheless, the emphasis on ESG at today's forum is due to the justification that it is difficult but is the way we should go and the urgency that it will be late if not now," he said. The FSS governor further mentioned that pursing ESG can threaten corporate management practices, but it also presents opportunities to meet more investors. "As an example to that is that the ESG level of companies has a positive effect in attracting foreign investors. Also, the so-called value consumer, led by the MZ generation, is showing purchasing behavior in consideration of the ESG activities of companies, so ESG has become an important factor in securing future consumers," he said. The MZ generation is a Korean term referring to people born between 1981 and the early 2010s. In his keynote speech, KIC CEO Jin urged institutional investors to join hands together to pursue ESG strategies based on social responsibility. "The KIC took an initiating role in establishing global stewardship principles among domestic institutional investors, and has made great efforts to improve profitability and sustainability through ESG investment," the CEO said. "The introduction of an ESG integration system that applies ESG values to the entire asset group and working processes can be a representative example of our efforts." For ESG value to contribute to improving environmental problems and solving corporate and social issues, Jin vowed that the KIC "plans to continue developing ESG investment and invest in ESG strategy funds and green projects." After the speeches, two panel discussions followed. "외국에선 6개월 걸릴 일을…"소상공인 손실보상 지급에 암참 회장도 '감탄' 뉴스토마토 이보라 기자 - 올해 3분기 코로나19로 인한 정부 방역조치로 손실을 본 소상공인 대상으로 손실보상 지원금 신청이 시작된 가운데 각종 외신들도 이에 관심을 보이고 있다. 특히 전세계 유래없는 손실보상금의 신속한 지급 시스템에 호평이 이어지고 있다. 29일 중소벤처기업부에 따르면 권칠승 중소벤처기업부 장관은 지난 28일 오전 광화문 프레스센터에서 외신 대상 손실보상금 지급 관련 브리핑을 열었다. 취임 후 첫 외신 브리핑으로, 소상공인 손실보상의 법제화와 지급 체계의 3R(Rapid·Recovered·Renewal)시스템을 강조했다는 후문이다. 이날 자리에 참석한 외신들은 국세청과 지자체의 행정자료를 기반으로 별도 서류제출 없이 신청과 동시에 지급하는 방식에 주목했다. 중기부 관계자는 "외국에서는 피해 산정과 보상금 지급에 대해 적어도 3개월에서 6개월이 걸리는 것과 비교해, 빠르면 당일 지급되는 시스템에 대해 감탄했다"고 설명했다. 축사에 나선 제임스 김 주한미국상공회의소(암참·AMCHAM) 회장은 "한국의 ICT기술을 접목한 빠르고 신속하고 편리한 보상체계인 3R프로세스에 놀랐다"면서 "내부적으로는 주한 미국기업들에게도 전파하고 미국연방정부와 관계자들에게 우수한 손실보상정책을 공유하겠다"고 말했다. 이어 "손실보상 정책을 통해 일상으로 회복돼가는 한국과 미국 스타트업·중견기업들 간 지속적인 교류와 협력체계가 구축되길 희망한다"고 밝혔다. 중기부는 국내에서 사업자등록이 완료된 외국인들도 코로나 소상공인 손실보상금을 받을 수 있다는 점을 외신 취재진들에게 강조했다고 설명했다. 중기부 관계자는 "영문 손실보상 사이트가 오픈하면 사업자등록번호를 가지고 있는 한국주재 외국인(소상공인)도 혜택을 받을 수 있을 것"이라고 기대했다. 한편 지난 27일 소상공인 손실보상 신청이 시작된 이후 현재(28일 오전8시 집계)까지 3만6688명에게 1237억원이 지급됐다. 금액 확인 후 지급신청 대기자는 4만7491명이다. 다만 접수가 시작된 첫날엔 손실보상 신청 사이트의 접속이 지연되고, 개인정보 등록이 차질을 빚는 상황이 발생하기도 했다. 중기부 측은 "현재 시스템은 원활하게 작동 중"이라고 설명했다. 손실보상기금은 10월 27일부터 10월 31일까지 온라인을 통해 간편하게 신청할 수 있으며, 11월 3일부터는 온라인 신청이 어려운 소상공인을 위해 시·군·구청에 설치되어 있는 손실보상 전담창구에서 오프라인으로도 신청·접수를 받을 계획이다. ---> 지금 신청하러 가기! 출처: www.newstomato.com/ReadNews.aspx?no=1083166

Under the theme “Shape of the Future: Trends to Rule Industries as World Rebounds from Pandemic,” this year’s forum was held at the Shilla Seoul and was livestreamed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Among the speakers of the event, in its fourth iteration, were Lee Jeong-dong, professor of technology management, economics and policy at Seoul National University, who served as a special adviser to President Moon Jae-in from 2019 till May this year; Hong Su-yeol, head of Resource Recycling Consulting; Cha In-hyok, CEO of CJ OliveNetworks and Jeon Jin-soo, vice president at SK Telecom. The speakers delivered lectures on burgeoning new trends in the wake of the pandemic and those that are expected to reshape the industrial landscape worldwide. Two main topics that all speakers had a consensus on throughout the forum were digital transformation and climate change. Politics and government representatives also called for the importance of digital transformation and environment-conscious business practices. Park Byeong-seug, speaker of the National Assembly, called on businesses to take action to change under the government’s Digital Green New Deal program. “Rapid digital transformation and the crisis of climate change are demanding innovations in our lives and in the paradigm of business management,” Park said in his congratulatory speech at the forum. “Companies are responding to those changes by innovating digital technologies and environmental, society and governance management.
