    Amid Samsung Electronics Labor Dispute

Growing labor uncertainty creates concerns about impact on AI infrastructure, global supply chain stability,

investor confidence, and Korea’s competitiveness as a premier regional business hub

May 11, 2026 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) expressed concerns today about the potential impact that the ongoing labor dispute and possibility of a strike at Samsung Electronics could have on global supply chains, industrial stability, and Korea’s long-term investment competitiveness.

Samsung Electronics plays a critical role in the global semiconductor ecosystem, particularly in the production of memory semiconductors essential to AI infrastructure, cloud computing, advanced manufacturing, automotive technologies, and the energy sector. As global demand for AI-related computing capacity continues to increase, the operational stability across Korea’s semiconductor industry has become increasingly important to multinational companies and global supply chain partners.

There are mounting concerns that any significant production disruptions or operational uncertainty at Samsung Electronics could place additional strain on the global memory semiconductor market, potentially worsening supply bottlenecks, price volatility, procurement uncertainty, and broader supply chain instability.

Many AMCHAM member companies across industries such as AI, cloud infrastructure, automotive, manufacturing, industrial technology, and energy remain highly dependent on stable semiconductor supply chains based in Korea. In today’s interconnected global economy, disruptions in strategically important industries can create ripple effects extending well beyond a single company or market.

In this context, continued labor uncertainty in key export-driven industries could affect confidence in Korea’s reputation as a stable and dependable global partner in manufacturing, technology, and supply chains, as well as its position as an important regional business hub. More broadly, disruptions affecting strategically important industries may also influence how global companies assess Korea’s reliability and resilience within the global technology ecosystem.

Growing uncertainty surrounding operational stability may also accelerate ongoing supply chain diversification efforts among multinational companies seeking to reduce concentration risk across critical industries. Competing regional manufacturing markets could benefit if concerns over predictability and continuity persist.

These dynamics are also reflected in AMCHAM’s recently released 2026 Business Environment Survey, in which Korea slipped to third place as a preferred regional headquarters destination in Asia among surveyed global companies, following Singapore and Hong Kong.

Survey respondents identified labor policy, regulatory predictability, and alignment with global standards among the key factors influencing regional headquarters and investment decisions. Situations such as the current labor uncertainty in the semiconductor sector may further influence how global companies evaluate Korea’s long-term investment environment and overall business stability.

“As the largest foreign chamber in Korea representing a broad cross-section of U.S. and global companies operating in the country, AMCHAM closely monitors developments that may affect the broader business and investment environment, including the ongoing labor dispute at Samsung Electronics,” said AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim. “In our ongoing dialogue with member companies and global business leaders, we continue to hear growing emphasis on supply chain resilience, operational continuity, and long-term business predictability across the region.”

He added, “Maintaining a stable and predictable business environment aligned with global standards is essential to strengthening Korea’s position as a leading regional headquarters and investment hub in the Asia-Pacific region. Korea has tremendous strengths, including world-class manufacturing capabilities, technological leadership, and exceptional talent. Continued efforts to reinforce supply chain reliability, operational stability, and business predictability will be important to sustaining Korea’s long-term global competitiveness.”

AMCHAM expressed hope that all stakeholders will continue engaging in constructive dialogue to reach a balanced and forward-looking resolution that supports Korea’s long-term competitiveness, supply chain reliability, and position as a trusted global investment destination.
