Korea’s Financial Competitiveness and Global Financial Hub Ambitions

April 10, 2026 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) met with Financial Services Commission (FSC) Chairman Lee Eog-weon at the Government Complex Seoul today to discuss policy directions to expand global financial institutions’ investment in Korea and promote Korea’s position as a global financial hub.

This meeting follows the release of AMCHAM’s first “Korea’s Financial Hub Agenda” Special Report in March. The report outlines key regulatory gaps between Korea and global standards in the banking and securities sectors and identifies measures for boosting Korea’s capital markets in line with President Lee Jae-myung’s initiatives.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Korea is at a critical juncture to strengthen its position as a global financial hub. The stability of Korea’s financial market, strong capital market momentum, and the push toward MSCI Developed Market status provide a solid foundation for this transition.”

He added, “A financial regulatory environment aligned with global standards, along with a stable and predictable supervisory framework, will play a critical role in attracting greater foreign investment. As I recently shared with President Lee Jae-myung, Korea has the potential to expand the number of regional headquarters from fewer than 100 today to 1,000. AMCHAM is committed to working closely with the Korean government to help realize this vision.”

FSC Chairman Lee Eog-weon expressed his appreciation for AMCHAM’s continued engagement and support for Korea’s financial sector, and outlined the government’s policy efforts, progress in financial industry innovation, and future priorities. He noted Korea’s rising global standing as a financial center, as reflected in the 39th Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI), where Seoul entered the top 10 for the first time, ranking 8th, and Busan achieved its highest-ever ranking, at 23rd.

Chairman Lee further stated that the FSC will continue to faithfully implement follow-up measures under the “MSCI Developed Market Index Inclusion Roadmap” (January 2026), in order to further enhance Korea’s competitiveness and facilitate foreign investment inflows.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on the policy recommendations, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to continued collaboration to enhance the competitiveness of Korea’s financial market. Chairman & CEO James Kim expressed his appreciation for the constructive dialogue and noted that AMCHAM looks forward to working closely with the FSC to help further strengthen Korea’s position as a leading global financial hub.

글로벌 금융허브 도약을 위한 정책 방향 논의

2026년 4월 10일 - 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 오늘 오후 정부서울청사에서 이억원 금융위원장을 만나 글로벌 금융기관의 한국 내 투자 확대와 글로벌 금융허브로의 도약을 위한 정책 방향에 대해 논의했다.

이번 면담은 암참이 지난 3월 발간한 첫 금융 부문 특별보고서 「한국 금융허브 추진전략(Korea’s Financial Hub Agenda)」를 계기로 마련됐다. 해당 보고서는 은행 및 증권 부문을 중심으로 한국 금융 규제가 글로벌 기준과 비교해 갖는 주요 격차를 진단하고, 이재명 정부의 자본시장 선진화 정책 기조와 연계하여 자본시장 경쟁력 강화를 위한 정책 과제를 제시하고 있다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는, “한국은 글로벌 금융허브로 도약할 수 있는 중요한 시점에 와 있다.”며, “한국 금융 시장의 안정성과 최근 자본시장의 긍정적인 흐름, MSCI 선진국 지수 편입 추진 등은 이러한 전환을 뒷받침하는 핵심 기반.”이라고 밝혔다.

이어, “글로벌 기준에 부합하는 금융 규제 환경과 안정적이고 예측 가능한 금융감독체계는 해외 투자 유치를 확대하는 데 있어 매우 중요한 요소.”라며, “최근 이재명 대통령께도 말씀드린 바와 같이, 현재 100개 미만 수준인 한국의 아·태지역본부를 1,000개까지 확대할 충분한 잠재력이 있다. 암참은 이러한 목표 달성을 위해 정부와 긴밀히 협력해 나갈 것.”이라고 강조했다.

이억원 금융위원장은 한국 금융부문에 대한 암참의 관심과 지원에 감사를 표하고, 그간 정책노력과 금융산업 혁신에 대한 국제사회의 평가와 향후 계획을 공유하였다. 제39차 글로벌금융센터지수에 따르면 서울이 10위권 내로 진입(8위)하고 부산이 역대 최고 순위(23위)를 기록하는 등 국제사회에서 한국 금융부문의 위상은 지속적으로 높아지고 있다. 금융위는 앞으로도 우리 경쟁력을 한층 높이고 외국인투자 유입을 촉진하기 위해 ?MSCI 선진지수편입 로드맵?(’26.1월)에 따른 후속조치를 착실히 이행해 나갈 계획이라고 밝혔다.

양측은 이날 논의된 정책 제언을 바탕으로 한국 금융시장의 글로벌 경쟁력 강화를 위해 긴밀한 협력을 이어 가기로 했다. 제임스 김 회장 겸 대표이사는 이번 면담에 대해 “건설적인 논의의 장이 마련된 데 대해 깊이 감사드린다.”며, “암참은 금융위원회와의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 한국이 글로벌 금융허브로 도약할 수 있도록 지속적으로 지원해 나갈 것.”이라고 밝혔다.
