AMCHAM Hosts Presidential Candidate Kim Moon-soo for Exclusive Dialogue on the Future of U.S.-Korea Economic Relations

Over 200 senior leaders from the global business community join policy dialogue on Korea’s future and the U.S.-Korea economic partnership

May 19, 2025 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) today hosted a special luncheon with presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo of the People Power Party. Held at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul, the event brought together more than 200 senior leaders from the global business community for a timely in-depth conversation on Korea’s political landscape and the future of U.S.-Korea economic cooperation just weeks ahead of Korea’s presidential election.

The luncheon served as a meaningful platform to hear firsthand from the presidential candidate about his key policy agenda and engage in candid discussions on key priorities shaping Korea’s long-term economic trajectory, including U.S.-Korea economic relations, regulatory reform, labor policy, and innovation strategy.

In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim welcomed candidate Kim and emphasized the importance of continued engagement and open dialogue between the global business community and public officials, particularly ahead of the election. “Korea today stands at a crossroads, facing complex political and economic challenges both domestically and globally. At this critical moment, we are truly fortunate to have Candidate Kim Moon-soo with us to share his invaluable insights and vision for Korea’s future,” he said.

He added, “I have admired his sharp insight, unwavering integrity, and visionary leadership, particularly in the areas of innovation and economic development, and look forward to engaging in a meaningful dialogue on how Korea can position itself as a leading regional headquarters hub and trusted economic partner to the United States.”

In his keynote address, Presidential Candidate Kim Moon-soo underscored his readiness to negotiate with President Trump to resolve outstanding tariff issues. “If elected President, I will visit the United States as early as June to hold a summit with President Trump and promptly resolve key issues that are hindering economic cooperation between our two countries,” he said.  “While prioritizing Korea’s national interests, I will pursue practical avenues for collaboration in sectors such as shipbuilding to open a new chapter of economic partnership grounded in mutual prosperity. In particular, we will reinforce our strategic alliance across the Indo-Pacific through joint research and technological cooperation in critical fields including AI, semiconductors, quantum computing, and cybersecurity.”

He further emphasized, “To give foreign companies greater confidence to invest in Korea, I will champion bold regulatory reforms and foster a more business-friendly environment by restructuring corporate taxes, modernizing the labor market, and expanding investment incentives. We will also strengthen cooperation in the defense industry through the joint development of advanced technologies, while expanding support for the stable presence of U.S. Forces Korea and enhancing our shared defense capabilities. Korea will remain the United States’ most trusted partner in economic, technological, and security cooperation as we work together to shape the future of the U.S.-Korea alliance.”

During the fireside chat moderated by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, candidate Kim addressed a wide range of policy topics, sharing a broad and ambitious policy vision. Reaffirming his strong belief in the U.S.-Korea alliance, he presented a vision to elevate the bilateral relationship into a comprehensive strategic partnership encompassing economic, technological, and security cooperation. “Without the United States, there would be no Republic of Korea,” he stated, reiterating his commitment to deepening the U.S.-Korea technology alliance through joint research and collaboration on global supply chains in critical fields such as AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing.

Kim also stressed the importance of regulatory reform to attract greater foreign investment, outlining solutions to address key investor concerns such as excessive regulation, labor market rigidity, and CEO-level legal risks. He pledged to establish a presidential task force dedicated to regulatory innovation, restructure the corporate tax system, and expand foreign investment zones to foster a more business-friendly environment where global companies can invest with confidence. Notably, he spoke candidly about his past anti-American, pro-North Korean views, emphasizing the need for responsible leadership that can overcome ideological divisions and lead the country toward greater unity.

Looking ahead to the APEC Summit to be held in Korea in 2025, Kim noted that President Trump’s visit alone would be a “major diplomatic event,” and expressed hope that the summit could serve as a platform to advance key U.S.-Korea security discussions, including defense cost-sharing, the stable presence of U.S. Forces Korea, and coordinated responses to North Korea’s nuclear threat. He also shared his ambition to create new joint business opportunities in leading industries such as shipbuilding, semiconductors, and automobiles, positioning the U.S.-Korea alliance as a forward-looking, pragmatic partnership for the future.

This luncheon was part of AMCHAM’s ongoing “Election Spotlight Series,” aimed at fostering policy discussions with leading candidates ahead of the presidential election. As a non-political and non-partisan organization, AMCHAM plans to continue engaging in meaningful conversations with other candidates in the lead-up to the election.

2025년 5월 19일 - 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 오늘 포시즌스 호텔 서울에서 김문수 국민의힘 대통령 후보를 초청해 특별 오찬 간담회를 개최했다. 이번 행사에는 국내·외 주요 글로벌 기업 관계자 200여 명이 참석해, 대통령 선거를 불과 몇 주 앞둔 중대한 시점에서 한국의 정치 지형과 한·미 경제 협력의 미래에 대해 시의적절하고 심도 있는 논의를 나눴다.

기조연설에서 김문수 후보는 “대통령에 당선된다면 오는 6월 중 미국을 방문해 트럼프 대통령과 조기 정상회담을 개최하고, 양국 간 경제 협력의 걸림돌이 되는 현안을 신속히 해결할 것.” 이라고 밝히며, “대한민국의 국익을 최우선으로 하되, 조선 등 미국이 관심을 갖는 분야에서 실질적 협력 방안을 발굴하여 한·미 양국이 함께 번영할 수 있는 새로운 경제 협력의 시대를 열겠다. 특히 AI, 반도체, 양자컴퓨팅, 사이버 안보 등 첨단 전략산업 분야에서의 공동 연구와 기술 협력을 통해 글로벌 공급망과 인도·태평양 지역에서의 전략 동맹을 더욱 공고히 하겠다.”고 덧붙였다.

그는 또한, “외국 기업들이 더욱 확신을 가지고 한국에 투자할 수 있도록 불합리한 규제를 철저히 혁신하고, 법인세 개편과 노동시장 구조 개선, 투자 인센티브 확대 등 기업 친화적인 환경을 조성하겠다.”고 덧붙이며, 또한, “국방 첨단기술의 공동 개발을 통해 방위산업 협력을 강화하고, 주한미군의 안정적 주둔 여건과 양국의 국방 역량 강화를 위한 지원도 확대해 나가겠습니다. 앞으로도 한국은 미국의 가장 신뢰할 수 있는 경제·기술·안보 파트너로서, 한미 동맹의 미래를 함께 만들어갈 것.” 이라고 말했다.

이어진 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사와의 좌담을 통해서 김문수 후보는 다양한 질문에 직접 답하며 폭넓은 정책 비전을 공유했다. 김문수 후보는 한미동맹에 대한 확고한 신념을 바탕으로, 양국 관계를 경제·기술·안보 전반에 걸친 전략적 동반자 관계로 더욱 강화하겠다는 비전을 제시했다. 그는 “미국 없이 대한민국은 존재할 수 없다.”며, AI, 반도체, 양자컴퓨팅 등 첨단 기술 분야에서의 공동 연구와 글로벌 공급망 협력을 통해 한미 기술 동맹을 심화하겠다는 의지를 재확인했다.

아울러 김 후보는 외국인 투자 확대를 위한 규제 혁신 의지를 강조하며, 기업의 투자 리스크로 지적되어온 과도한 규제, 노동시장 경직성, CEO 리스크 해소를 위한 해법을 제시했다. 대통령 직속 규제 혁신 전담기구 신설, 세제 개편, 외국인 전용단지 확대 등 구체적인 정책 방향을 통해 글로벌 기업들이 보다 안심하고 투자할 수 있는 환경을 조성하겠다고 밝혔다. 또한, 과거 본인의 반미·친북 성향 이력을 솔직히 밝히며, 이념 갈등을 넘어 국민 통합을 실현할 수 있는 책임 있는 리더십을 강조했다.

특히 김 후보는 2025년 한국에서 개최되는 APEC 정상회의와 관련해 “트럼프 대통령의 방한 자체가 큰 외교적 이벤트가 될 것.”이라며, 방위비 분담 협상, 주한미군 안정적 주둔, 북핵 대응 방안 등 한·미 간 주요 안보 현안을 APEC 계기를 통해 구체화할 수 있을 것이라고 기대감을 나타냈다. 아울러 조선, 반도체, 자동차 등 양국의 주력 산업 분야에서 새로운 공동 비즈니스 기회를 창출하고, 한미 동맹을 미래지향적 실용 동맹으로 한 단계 도약시키겠다는 구상을 밝혔다.
