April 28, 2025 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted a highly-informative AMCHAM Insights session at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. Centered on the theme “Navigating U.S. Trade Policy Shifts and Tariff Risks - Implications for Korea,” this timely event brought together leading global experts to examine the evolving landscape of U.S. trade policy and what it could mean for Korean industries.

Amid escalating global uncertainties and tariff risks, the forum provided a critical platform for business leaders to assess emerging challenges and identify actionable strategies.

In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim emphasized the importance of proactive engagement: “For many of our member companies, rising geopolitical uncertainty, escalating tariffs, and supply chain disruptions are not abstract policy trends ? they are real, immediate challenges impacting business strategy and long-term growth. That’s why AMCHAM is committed to proactive engagement and constructive dialogue, working to build a trade environment that is transparent, predictable, and mutually beneficial for both the United States and Korea.”

The keynote address, delivered by Shiv Shivaraman, Asia Region Leader and Partner & Managing Director at AlixPartners, explored how businesses can thrive in today’s increasingly complex geopolitical environment. He said, “The U.S. administration's goal with tariffs is clear: to revive domestic manufacturing, correct trade imbalances, and shield vulnerable sectors. What's unclear is the strategy behind their use ? are tariffs a short-term bargaining chip or a long-term protectionist policy? This ambiguity fuels uncertainty. Business leaders must act now to mitigate immediate risks while also fortifying supply chains for long-term resilience.”

This was followed by an in-depth analysis of recent tariff developments and compliance strategies by John Leonard, Senior Advisor at Kim & Chang and former Deputy Executive Assistant Commissioner at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). “In this complex and chaotic time for world trade, companies need to simultaneously manage compliance, remain up to date on changes, and be aware of opportunities. Experience and knowledge on how U.S. government trade agencies such as the United States Trade Representative (USTR), Department of Commerce (DOC), and CBP operate and enforce is critical to both survive and thrive during this period of uncertainty,” he said.

Stephen Dyer, Asia Automotive and Industrial Practice Leader and Partner & Managing Director, and Sudeep Suman, Global Trade Optimization Lead and Partner & Managing Director at AlixPartners, also addressed the broader implications of evolving global trade environments on business and outlined strategic approaches for managing the associated risks.

A key highlight of the session was the expert panel discussion moderated by Sung Uk Park, Partner at Yulchon LLC and former Executive Vice President of SK On. Panelists Shiv Shivaraman, Sudeep Suman, and John Leonard shared real-world insights on the industry-level implications of evolving trade measures and explored strategic approaches to mitigate related risks.

2025년 4월 28일 - 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 그랜드 하얏트 서울 호텔에서 ‘미국 통상 정책 변화와 관세 리스크: 한국 산업에 미치는 영향’을 주제로 “AMCHAM Insights” 세션을 성공적으로 개최했다.

이번 세미나는 최근 미국의 통상 정책 변화와 관세 리스크가 한국 산업에 미치는 영향을 진단하고, 기업들이 불확실한 글로벌 환경 속에서 실질적으로 대응할 수 있는 전략을 모색하기 위해 마련되었다.

글로벌 컨설팅 기업 알릭스파트너스(AlixPartners)와 김앤장 법률사무소의 전문가들이 연사로 참여해, 정책 변화에 따른 기업의 리스크 관리, 운영 안정성 확보, 규제 대응 전략 등에 대해 깊이 있는 인사이트를 제공했다.

첫번째 기조연설은 알릭스파트너스(AlixPartners)의 시브 시바라만(Shiv Shivaraman) 아시아 지역 총괄 대표가 맡아, 급변하는 지정학적 환경 속에서 기업이 어떻게 회복탄력성을 유지하며 성장 기회를 모색할 수 있을지에 대한 통찰을 공유했다.

그는, “미국 정부가 관세를 통해 이루고자 하는 목표는, 미국 자국의 제조업을 활성화하고, 국가 간 무역 불균형을 바로잡으며, 취약한 산업을 보호하는 것이다. 하지만 이러한 관세가 단기적인 협상 카드인지, 아니면 장기적인 보호무역 전략의 일환인지는 여전히 명확하지 않아 이러한 불확실성이 시장에 혼란을 주고 있다.”고 말하며, “지금이야말로 기업 리더들이 신속하게 리스크를 관리하는 동시에, 장기적으로 위기에 강한 공급망을 구축해 나가야 할 시점.” 이라고 덧붙였다.

이어서 김앤장 법률사무소의 고문이자 美 관세국경보호국 (U.S. Customs and Border Protection) 무역부 부국장보를 역임한 존 레너드(John Leonard)가 최근 관세 정책 변화와 관련된 주요 이슈 및 기업의 준법 대응 전략을 상세히 설명했다.

그는, “세계 무역이 복잡하고 혼란스러운 지금, 기업들은 컴플라이언스를 관리하는 동시에, 변화에 대한 최신 정보를 유지하고, 기회를 포착할 필요가 있다.”고 말하며, “미국 무역대표부, 상무부 및 관세국경보호청과 같은 무역 관련 미국 정부기관의 운영 및 집행에 대한 경험과 지식은, 불확실한 이 시기에 기업이 생존을 넘어 성장하기 위하여 반드시 필요하다.”고 강조했다
