AMCHAM Showcases Korea’s Resilience and Strengthens U.S.-Korea Economic Ties at President Donald Trump’s Inauguration

Engagements with U.S. policymakers, business leaders, and think tank at this critical period 

highlight AMCHAM’s role as a vital bridge between the U.S. and Korea

February 4, 2025 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) successfully concluded a high-impact visit to Washington, D.C. during President Donald Trump’s Presidential Inauguration. The visit provided a unique opportunity to advance meaningful dialogue, showcase Korea’s resilience, and reaffirm the enduring strength of the U.S.-Korea alliance.

During the visit, AMCHAM engaged in a series of high-level meetings with U.S. policymakers, business leaders, and think tanks. In key discussions with the Trump administration’s cabinet, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, as well as U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-IN), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and the offices of Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and Bill Hagerty (R-TN), AMCHAM underscored the critical importance of continued U.S.-Korea collaboration in addressing global challenges such as supply chain resilience, technological innovation, and economic security.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim also participated in several events as part of the Presidential Inauguration, including the Make America Great Again Victory Rally, Candlelight Dinner, Swearing-In Ceremony, the Parade, and the Starlight Ball. These engagements reinforced AMCHAM’s role as a vital bridge connecting U.S. and Korean stakeholders in celebrating shared values and advancing mutual priorities.

“It was an incredible experience to be part of President Trump’s inauguration,” said James Kim, Chairman and CEO of AMCHAM. “Being part of the various Inauguration activities, I felt the strong energy of the U.S. citizens who waited a long time to support the new leadership of Trump 2.0. Only by physically being in Washington D.C., can you feel this type of intensity and passion. It was a time to celebrate the partnership between the U.S. and Korea and reflect on the strong ties that unite us.”

He continued, “During my visit to Washington, D.C., I emphasized the importance of sustained U.S.-Korea collaboration, particularly as Korea navigates a shifting political landscape. I expressed confidence in Korea’s democratic and economic resilience and reaffirmed AMCHAM’s commitment to supporting the U.S.-Korea alliance as Korea continues to establish itself as a key business hub in the Asia-Pacific region. 

“AMCHAM looks forward to working closely with the Trump Administration to further strengthen economic ties, expand strategic partnerships, and foster a thriving business environment that benefits both nations,” he added.

AMCHAM also held important discussions with Korean Ambassador to the United States Cho Hyun Dong, focusing on enhancing trade and investment ties in critical industries such as semiconductors and green energy. Additionally, AMCHAM met with influential thought leaders, including President and CEO John Hamre of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), to exchange insights into geopolitical trends and strategies for navigating the evolving global landscape.

AMCHAM’s presence in Washington, D.C., during this critical time underscored Korea’s significant contributions to global supply chain resilience. These discussions highlighted Korea’s unique capacity to bolster key sectors, including semiconductors, electric vehicles, and clean energy solutions. The visit also emphasized AMCHAM’s advocacy for policies to enhance Korea’s competitiveness as a regional business hub. By championing regulatory harmonization and structural reforms, AMCHAM continues to position Korea as a premier destination for global investment and innovation.

2025년 2월 04일 - 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 미국 트럼프 대통령 취임식 기간 동안 워싱턴 D.C.를 방문해 의미 있는 성과를 거두며 일정을 성공적으로 마무리했다. 이번 방문은 한·미 경제협력을 더욱 강화하고, 한국의 회복력을 강조하며, 한미동맹의 지속적이고 굳건한 유대를 재확인하는 중요한 계기가 됐다.

암참은 美 의회 정책 입안자, 주요 기업 대표, 그리고 저명한 싱크탱크와의 고위급 릴레이 회담을 통해 다양한 의견을 나누며 한·미 경제협력 관계의 발전 방향을 논의했다. 

트럼프 2기 행정부 내각의 마르코 루비오(Marco Rubio) 국무부 장관, 하워드 루트닉(Howard Lutnick) 상무장관을 비롯해 토드 영(Todd Young, R-IN), 태미 덕워스(Tammy Duckworth, D-IL) 상원의원 및 존 오소프(Jon Ossoff, D-GA), 빌 해거티 (Bill Hagerty, R-TN) 상원의원실과의 논의를 통해 암참은 공급망 회복력, 기술 혁신, 경제 안보 등 글로벌 과제 해결을 위한 한·미 협력의 중요성을 강조했다.

한편, 제임스 김 회장 겸 대표이사는 트럼프 대통령 취임식의 일환으로 진행된 Make America Great Again Victory Rally, Candlelight Dinner, Swearing-In Ceremony, Parade, Starlight Ball 등 주요 행사에 참석했다. 이를 통해 암참이 한·미 양국의 이해관계자들을 연결하는 가교 역할을 수행하고 있음을 다시 한번 확인하며, 양국이 공유하는 가치를 기념하고 경제협력의 중요성을 강조하는 중요한 기회가 마련됐다.

그는 이어 “워싱턴 D.C. 방문 기간 동안 내내 변화하는 정치 환경 속에서 지속적인 한·미 협력의 중요성을 강조했다. 또한, 한국의 민주주의와 경제적 회복력에 대한 확신을 전하며, 한국이 아시아 태평양 지역의 핵심 비즈니스 허브로 자리매김하는 과정에서 한미동맹을 적극적으로 지원하겠다는 암참의 확고한 의지를 밝혔다.”고 덧붙였다. 또한, “암참은 트럼프 행정부와 긴밀히 협력하며 양국 간 경제협력을 더욱 강화하고, 전략적 파트너십을 확대하며, 양국 모두에 이득이 되는 역동적인 비즈니스 환경을 조성하는 데 최선을 다할 것”이라고 강조했다.

방미 기간 중 암참은 조현동 주미한국대사와도 만나 반도체와 친환경 에너지 같은 핵심 산업 분야에서의 양국 무역 및 투자 강화 방안을 논의했다. 또한, 미국 전략국제문제연구소(CSIS) 존 헴리(John Hamre) 회장을 비롯한 전문가들과 만나 변화하는 글로벌 환경 속에서의 지정학적 동향과 이에 대한 대응 전략을 논의하며 주요 통찰을 공유했다.

이번 워싱턴 D.C. 방문을 통해 암참은 한국이 글로벌 공급망 회복력 강화에 기여하는 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있음을 강조했다. 이번 논의에서 한국이 반도체, 전기차, 친환경 에너지 솔루션 등 핵심 산업의 성장과 안정성을 뒷받침하는 독자적인 역량을 보유하고 있음을 재확인했다.

또한, 이번 방문은 한국이 아시아 지역의 경제 허브로 자리 잡을 수 있도록 암참이 추진하는 정책적 지원 노력을 부각하는 계기가 됐다. 암참은 앞으로도 규제 조화와 구조적 개혁을 통해 한국이 글로벌 투자 및 혁신의 중심지로 자리매김할 수 있도록 대정부정책지원 (advocacy) 활동을 이어간다는 계획이다.
