January 8, 2025 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted a special roundtable meeting today with Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon at the AMCHAM office in Yeouido.
The event highlighted AMCHAM's unwavering commitment to strengthening partnerships between U.S. businesses and Korea’s dynamic economy. With Gyeonggi Province playing a critical role in this collaboration, the discussions underscored the importance of economic stability and the need to maintain business continuity amid uncertainties in the current political environment.
AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, along with representatives from member companies 3M, Applied Materials Korea, Bloom Energy Korea, Coupang, Ecolab Korea, and UL Solutions, shared valuable perspectives on investment opportunities, strategies to attract multinational corporations, and initiatives to enhance Korea’s competitiveness as a regional hub. Governor Kim reaffirmed his dedication to fostering economic cooperation and creating a business-friendly environment to attract foreign direct investment.
“We are honored to host Governor Kim as U.S.-Korea relations reach new heights. I have known Governor Kim for nearly a decade and has always remained impressed with his passion for U.S.” said AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim. “Under his leadership. Gyeonggi Province has become a global economic hub, and AMCHAM is proud to support initiatives that strengthen our bilateral partnerships.”
He emphasized the critical need for a competitive environment to attract multinational corporations, stating, “Korea has immense potential to become a leading hub for multinational corporations in the Asia-Pacific region. Achieving this requires collaboration to address challenges, enhance regulatory clarity, and encourage sustained investment.”
Looking ahead to President Trump’s Inauguration next week, he added, “Korea remains a trusted partner of the United States, and the U.S. continues to benefit greatly from the significant contributions of Korean companies to its economy. Hyundai/Kia, SK, Samsung, and LG are prime examples of companies that have become integral to the U.S. market.” He reiterated AMCHAM’s commitment to advancing bilateral economic ties, saying, “We are optimistic about setting new milestones in U.S.-Korea partnerships in 2025 and supporting events like the APEC Summit to showcase Korea’s resilience and strategic importance.”
Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon pledged to ensure an optimal business environment where foreign investors can operate with confidence, even amidst domestic and global challenges. “Gyeonggi Province is committed to collaborating with AMCHAM in areas such as semiconductors, future mobility, and biotechnology to foster a vibrant and sustainable business ecosystem,” he said. The Governor also outlined key initiatives to support foreign-invested companies and encouraged active participation from AMCHAM member companies.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to collaboration between Gyeonggi Province and AMCHAM. Both parties expressed optimism for another record-breaking year in U.S.-Korea partnerships. AMCHAM remains dedicated to supporting the success of the upcoming APEC Summit in Korea, which will serve as a platform to showcase the country’s resilience and strategic value on the global stage.

2025년 1월 8일 - 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 오후 여의도 암참 사무실에서 김동연 경기도지사와 특별 간담회를 개최했다. 이번 비공개 간담회를 통해 암참은 국내 정치적 불확실성이 커지고 있는 상황 속에서 한·미 경제 협력을 한층 더 강화하려는 확고한 의지를 다시 한번 보여주었다.
국내 최대 광역단체로서 글로벌 투자처의 중심지로 자리 잡은 경기도가 가진 중요성을 바탕으로, 참석자들은 정치적 불확실성 속에서도 경제 안정성을 유지하고 비즈니스 연속성을 확보하기 위한 방안에 대해 심도 있는 논의를 진행했다.
제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사와 3M, 어플라이드 머티어리얼즈 코리아, 블룸에너지 코리아, 쿠팡, 한국이콜랩, UL Solutions 등 주요 회원사 대표자들은 투자 기회 확대 및 다국적 기업 유치 방안, 한국의 아·태 지역 허브 경쟁력 제고 등을 위한 다양한 의견을 공유했다.
제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 “한·미 관계가 전례 없이 깊어진 시점에 김동연 지사님을 모시고 뜻깊은 자리를 마련하게 되어 매우 영광이다. 김 지사님과는 10년 가까이 인연을 이어오며, 항상 미국에 대한 열정에 깊은 감명을 받아왔다.” 라고 말하며, “지사님의 리더십 하에 경기도는 글로벌 경제 허브로 성장했으며, 암참은 양국 간 파트너십 강화를 위해 관련 이니셔티브들을 지속적으로 지원해 나갈 것.”이라고 덧붙였다.
이어 다국적 기업 유치를 위한 경쟁력 있는 환경 조성의 중요성을 강조하며, “한국은 다국적 기업의 아·태지역 경제 허브로 성장할 수 있는 잠재력이 크지만, 이를 실현하기 위해서는 규제의 명확성과 안정적인 투자 환경을 마련하는 등의 도전 과제를 해결해야 한다.”고 덧붙였다.
그는 또한 다가오는 트럼프 대통령 취임식을 언급하며, “한국은 미국의 신뢰할 수 있는 파트너이며, 현대/기아, SK, 삼성, LG로 대표되는 한국 기업들은 이미 미국 경제에서 없어서는 안 될 핵심적인 역할을 하고 있다. 한국 기업들의 투자와 경제적 기여는 양국 관계를 더욱 견고히 하고 있다.”고 말했다. 이어 “2025년, 양국 파트너십이 새로운 도약을 이룰 것으로 확신하며, APEC 정상회의와 같은 행사를 통해 한국의 회복력과 전략적 중요성을 세계에 알리는 데 기여할 수 있도록 전폭적으로 지원할 것.”이라고 밝혔다.
김동연 경기도지사는 불안정한 국내외 정세 속에서 외국인 투자자들이 경기도에서 안심하고 기업 활동에 집중할 수 있도록 최적의 환경을 조성하겠다고 약속하며, “경기도는 암참과 반도체, 미래차, 바이오 등 첨단 산업 분야에서 활발히 협력하며, 활기차고 지속 가능한 비즈니스 생태계를 만들어 나가겠다.”고 밝혔다. 김 지사는 이어 경기도의 외국인 투자 기업 지원 정책과 제도 개선 노력을 소개하며, 암참 회원사들의 적극적인 협력을 요청했다.
이번 간담회는 경기도와 암참 간의 긴밀한 협력 의지를 재확인하며 성공적으로 마무리됐다. 양측은 2025년 한·미 경제 협력의 새로운 장을 열어갈 것이라는 기대감을 공유했다. 암참은 APEC 정상회의의 성공적인 개최를 적극 지원하며, 한국의 회복력과 글로벌 경제에서의 전략적 가치를 알리기 위한 다양한 이니셔티브를 지속적으로 추진할 예정이다.
