Korea’s 2026 PIPA: What Global Companies Need to Know
DESCRIPTION
On Thursday, October 29, AMCHAM will host a special seminar featuring two attorneys from Bae, Kim & Lee LLC (BKL) on the significant changes to Korea’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) taking effect in September 2026. Designed for executives and privacy leaders at multinational companies, the seminar will focus on what the amended PIPA means in practice for corporate management, global data operations, and regulatory exposure in Korea.
Across two sessions, the speakers will address several issues likely to require attention from both Korean operations and regional or global headquarters, including compliance with Korea’s cross-border data transfer requirements, strengthened qualification and accountability requirements for Chief Privacy Officers (CPOs) and Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs), and the significantly increased financial consequences of serious PIPA violations. The speakers will also review recent privacy enforcement cases in Korea to highlight the areas attracting heightened regulatory scrutiny, the types of compliance failures that have resulted in significant sanctions, and the practical lessons companies can draw from these cases. Together, these developments demonstrate how privacy and cybersecurity compliance is increasingly becoming a CEO- and board-level governance issue, rather than solely the responsibility of legal, privacy, or information security teams.
*All Sessions will be conducted in English.
