AMCHAM Explores Opportunities for Energy Collaboration between U.S. and Korea

2017.09.19

September 19, 2017 ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) in partnership with U.S. LNG portfolio company, NextDecade Corporation, will hold the first “U.S. ? Korea Energy Cooperation Seminar” on Monday, September 25 at the Emerald Room, Lotte Hotel Seoul. Representatives from the U.S. and Korean governments and industries will gather to discuss the landscape of the Korean energy industry and explore potential areas of collaboration with the U.S.

This seminar is part of AMCHAM’s ongoing efforts to improve the U.S. goods trade deficit with Korea, one of the most important bilateral trade issues on which AMCHAM has played a significant role since the AMCHAM Washington Doorknock visits in May this year. At the AMCHAM Press Conference in June, Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors, suggested increasing Korea’s U.S. LNG imports as one of the measures the Korean government could implement to positively contribute to the ongoing talks on the U.S. ? Korea FTA.

With the new Moon Administration’s drive to gradually increase the use of LNG and renewable energy as environmentally friendly sources of electricity in Korea’s power mix, domestic demand for LNG is expected to grow, prompting the need for Korea to implement plans to secure additional supplies of stable and competitive LNG. A deeper U.S. - Korea partnership in energy has the potential to expand the U.S. and Korean energy trade market and bring a wide array of benefits and opportunities at both the governmental and industrial levels. Increased energy trade between the two countries will not only ensure Korea’s energy security but also enable Korea to enjoy the benefits of competitive U.S. LNG prices whilst improving the U.S. trade deficit with Korea. Furthermore, cooperation between the two countries is expected to bring opportunities for Korean energy companies to integrate their industry expertise with abundant shale gas resources in the U.S. and enter the global LNG market both as exporters of U.S. LNG and a North-East Asian regional LNG hub operator.

The seminar will include opening remarks from James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, as well as officials from the National Assembly and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), including H.E. Jang Byung-wan, Chairman of Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee of the National Assembly and H.E. Lee Sang-min, National Assemblyman of the Democratic Party and H.E. Park Won-joo, Deputy Minister for Energy and Resources of MOTIE.

Key industry leaders will also deliver in-depth presentations on various topics such as the U.S. shale revolution and areas for bilateral collaboration as well as Korea’s growing role in the energy industry in the Asia-Pacific region. Kathleen Eisbrenner, Chairman and CEO of NextDecade Corporation, will speak about “Cooperation Strategies between the U.S. and the Korean Energy Industry”, including Korea’s potential to become a U.S. LNG exporter. Eisbrenner will put forward NextDecade’s plan to continue its efforts to vitalize the bilateral energy partnership and help expand the Korean energy industry. Korea Energy Economics Institute Research Fellow Lee Sanglim’s presentation will be on “The U.S. Shale Revolution and Korea’s Overseas Energy Procurement Policy”, Hanyang Corporation President Kim Kwang Jin on “Korea as Northeast Asia’s LNG Hub,” and Korea Gas Corporation Chief Researcher Kim Boyoung on U.S. LNG and KOREA.

After the individual presentations, a panel discussion will take place on “Bilateral Energy Cooperation Efforts”, involving the presenters and Park Hyung-il, Head of the LNG Business Division at SK E&S as well as (Susan) Yeyoung Ji, Marketing Director at Baker Hughes, a GE Company.
