AMCHAM General Membership Meeting with H.E. Yoo Il Ho

June 30, 2016 (SEOUL) ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a luncheon with His Excellency Yoo Il Ho, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) for Economic Affairs and Minister of Strategy and Finance (MOSF), at the Grand Hyatt Seoul on June 30, 2016. DPM Yoo met with AMCHAM for the first time since his appointment as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance in January 2016.

 

DPM Yoo gave a speech on “New Leap for Korea-U.S. Economic Ties: Reinvigoration and Vision” and underscored the bright prospects of Korea-U.S. economic ties and AMCHAM’s role in it.

 

In his speech, the DPM addressed strong potentials as well as some challenges including aging society that Korea’s economy faces today. He listed three major areas where Korean government is exerting efforts to enhance its potentials: reinvigorating the economy through reforms, identifying new growth engines, and strengthening “soft power” through deregulation. In particular, he mentioned that Korean government will continue its efforts for deregulation to promote foreign investment and to create a business-friendly environment.

 

DPM Yoo closed his speech emphasizing that the partnership between Korea and the U.S. is broaden and strengthened throughout the history and it is expected to grow even more robust through new economic ties in the areas such as aerospace, energy, environment, etc. In that, he asked AMCHAM member companies active engagement and support.

 

During the fireside chat following the speech, DPM Yoo answered to questions regarding ongoing issues in global and Korean economy. In response to a question about Brexit, DPM Yoo outlined what impacts Brexit would have on the Korean economy and emphasized that the Korean government will implement the countermeasures to address those impacts.   

 

As this year marks the 4th anniversary of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA), DPM Yoo also commented on the ongoing success and strengths of the KORUS FTA Refuting the argument that the KORUS FTA is undermining the U.S. economy, DPM Yoo underscored that the KORUS FTA is mutually beneficial for both countries.

 

AMCHAM Chairman James Kim, President, CEO, and Chairman of GM Korea, who moderated the fireside chat, closed the event stating how “DPM Yoo’s insights and prospects on the Korean economy were truly timely and significant” and that “AMCHAM will continue our efforts to align with Korean government’s drive for the economic development.”

 

Approximately 120 representatives from various American and multinational companies as well as the Honorable Mark W. Lippert, Honorary Chairman of AMCHAM and U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, gathered at the meeting to learn about Korean government’s direction and strategies to boost the economy and further strengthen the U.S.-Korea economic cooperation through closer partnership with AMCHAM. also attended the luncheon and displayed his support for U.S.-Korea economic cooperation.

암참유일호 경제부총리 초청 오찬간담회 개최

?

2016 6 30서울 ? 주한미국상공회의소(AMCHAM, 이하 ‘암참’) 6 30그랜드 하얏트 서울에서 유일호 경제부총리 겸 기획재정부 장관을 초청하여 오찬간담회를 개최했다이는 유일호 경제부총리의 2016 1월 취임 후 암참과 처음으로 만난 자리였다

 

유일호 경제부총리는 ‘-미 경제협력의 새로운 도약활력과 비전을 주제로 한 연설을 통해한미 경제협력이 앞으로 더욱 강화될 것으로 전망하며이를 위한 암참의 역할을 강조했다.

 

유 부총리는 한국 경제는 높은 성장 잠재력을 가졌다고 말하며한편 고령화 사회 등과 같은 직면하고 있는 도전과제 등에 대해서도 언급했다이에 대응하기 위한 한국 정부의 세 가지 우선 과제를 설명했다경제 활력과 경제력의 회복새로운 성장동력의 발굴그리고 규제개선 등을 통한 소프트파워를 제고의 우선 과제를 위해 기울이고 있는 다양한 노력에 대해서도 상세히 설명했다특히외국인 투자 촉진 및 기업하기 좋은 환경구축을 위한 규제 철폐를 위한 노력을 계속 해 나갈 것임을 강조했다.

 

또한한미 양국의 경제 협력이 글로벌 동맹으로 그 분야를 넓혀온 역사적인 과정에 대해 말하며항공우주에너지환경 등의 분야 에서 앞으로 그 협력 분야를 넓히고 강화해 나갈 것을 제안하며이를 위해 암참 기업인들의 적극적인 협조를 당부했다.  

 

연설 후 이어진 좌담에서 유 부총리는 최근 이슈가 되고 있는 국내외 경제에 관련된 암참의 질문에 대답했다영국의 유렵연합(EU) 탈퇴에 관한 질문에 대해한국 경제에 미칠 영향에 대해 언급하며이에 대비하기 위해 한국은 강력하게 대비할 것임을 다시 한 번 강조했다.

 

또한한미 자유무역협정(FTA) 4주년을 맞이하며이 협정이 지속적인 성과를 거두고 있는 점을 강조했다자유무역협정이 미국 경제에 손실을 준다는 주장에 대해서는유 부총리는 이 협정이 양국 모두에게 수혜를 가져오고 있다고 일축했다.  

 

좌담을 진행한 제임스 김 암참 회장 및 한국지엠 대표이사 사장 및 이사회의장은 이번 오찬은 여러 의미로 매우 시의적절하고 의미 깊었다며 암참은 한국정부의 경제 발전을 위한 노력에 지속해서 협조하겠다고 회의를 끝맺었다.

 

암참 명예회장인 마크 리퍼트 주한미국대사와 약 120여 명의 미국 및 다국적 기업 관계자들이 이 날 행사에 참여해한국의 경제 회복을 위한 정책의 방향에 대해 논의하고한미 경제 협력을 강화하기 위한 암참의 전략에 대해 듣는 시간을 가졌다
