September 22, 2014 (SEOUL) ? American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) held “the 5th AMCHAM Innovation Camp” at Kangwon National University on September 22 (Shin Seung-Ho, the President of Kangwon National University). Following the footsteps of prior Innovation Camps which were held in great success, AMCHAM helped promote the global competitiveness of the bright youth in Kangwon-do by arranging the meeting where the students can directly meet the CEOs and senior executives of leading U.S. companies. Marking the fifth event this year, AMCHAM Innovation Camp is aimed at boosting regional economy and encouraging students with building their careers through the lectures from the CEOs of multinational corporates. Amy Jackson, President of AMCHAM, emphasized that “These Innovation Camps are one of the most popular events sponsored by AMCHAM. We, AMCHAM and our members, have focused on giving back to the Korean society through diverse CSR activities. I am very delighted and confident that the innovation camps provide a unique opportunity for Korean youth to hear directly from CEOs and senior executives of leading global companies in Korea. We hope this valuable experience will help them strengthen their global competitiveness and encourage them to aim higher in their careers.”This year’s Innovation Camp was consisting of two separate sessions. It provided useful information as to what kind of people do multinational companies want through lectures led by CEOs and the group mentoring sessions. Also, participating students were given a booklet that has information about internship programs in some U.S. companies in Korea.During the opening remarks, Shirley Yu-Tsui, Chairwoman of the AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future (ACIF), said, “To be successful today, first of all, young people need to have a better grasp of themselves and what they truly want. We also want you to have the “Wild Ducks” spirit, dauntlessly challenging and trying new things without fear.” Furthermore, she also stated that “ten years from now on, there comes the generation of “creating” the jobs, unlike my days of “searching” for jobs. While today’s diverse occupations will vanish, new jobs would emerge. Therefore, today’s youth need to be more creative and innovative.”In Session 1(CEO lectures), Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of Partners for the Future Foundation (AMCHAM’s charity foundation) and Attorney at Law of Kim & Chang, hosted the special CEO lectures. Shirley Yu-Tsui, General Manager of IBM Korea and Chairwoman of AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future (ACIF); Jeong-Taik Rim, President of DuPont Korea; and H.S. Lee, President of Intel Korea, gave invaluable lectures regarding the conditions for global competitiveness, preparations for employment in global companies and the leadership qualities based on their personal experiences. In Session 2 (mentoring session), each of the nine CEOs and senior executives from leading U.S. companies (including Chairwoman Shirley Yu-Tsui and President Jeong-Taik Rim who gave CEO lectures) were assigned to a group of students and had a speech and a Q&A session on the qualification of potential global employees. Mentors included Amy Jackson, President of AMCHAM Korea; Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of Partners for the Future Foundation; OJ Kim, CFO/COO of GE Korea; Jay Lee, Corporate Affairs and Government Affairs Manager of Intel Korea; Yongsook Shin, Senior Manager of 3M Korea.; David M. Waters, Managing Director & General Counsel of GM Korea; and Jung-Hwon Chun, Regional Director of Hewlette Packard. The 5th AMCHAM Innovation Camp was preceded by a courtesy call on Governor of Gangwon Province, Choi Moon-Soon, and a foreign investment briefing hosted by East-coast Free Economic Zone (EFEZ) team at Gangwon Provincial Office. At the briefing, the AMCHAM delegation was informed about Gangwon-do’s overall investment environment and its major ongoing business projects in order to have an opportunity to strengthen beneficial trade and investment ties.In October 2012, AMCHAM launched the AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future, a new body that is made up of senior executives of leading U.S. companies in Korea with the aim of promoting innovation in Korea, encouraging closer partnerships between Korean and U.S. companies and supporting Korea’s youth. Shirley Yu-Tsui, General Manager of IBM Korea, was appointed the new Chairwoman of the Council on February 19, 2014.Four previous Innovation Camps that were aimed at securing the job opportunity for the students in the region as well as activating the economy of the region were held respectively at Chungbuk National University(April 2013), Pusan National University (September 2013), Keimyung University (November 2013), and University of Seoul (April 2014). 암참, 강원대에서 ‘제5회 암참 혁신캠프’ 개최
?
주한미국상공회의소(AMCHAM, 이하 ‘암참’)는 9월 22일 강원대학교(총장 신승호)에서 ‘제 5회 암참 혁신캠프’를 개최했다. 암참은 성공적으로 개최된 지난 네 번의 혁신캠프에 이어, 이번 행사를 통해 대학생들이 미국 선도기업 CEO 및 임원들과 직접 만나는 자리를 마련하여 강원 지역 학생들의 글로벌 경쟁력 향상을 돕는데 주력했다.?
올해로 5회를 맞이하는 암참 혁신캠프는 국내 미국계 다국적 기업 CEO들의 강연 활동을 통해 투자 유치를 통한 지역 경제 활성화와 더불어 현지 대학생들의 진로 설계에 도움이 되고자 기획되었다. 에이미 잭슨 암참 대표는 “혁신캠프는 암참의 주요 행사 중 하나”라고 강조하며, “암참은 그 동안 다양한 활동을 통해 한국사회에서 사회공헌을 실천 해 왔다. 혁신캠프를 통해 한국 젊은이들이 글로벌 기업CEO 및 임원들과의 직접적인 만남을 통해 글로벌 경쟁력을 키우고 더 큰 목표를 향해 도약 할 수 있을 것이라고 믿는다”라고 말했다.
1부 CEO 특강과 2부 소규모 멘토링으로 진행된 금번 혁신 캠프에서는 참여 학생들에게 다국적 기업의 인재상 및 취업과 관련한 다양한 정보가 제공되었다. 또한 참여 학생들에게는 국내 미국 기업들의 인턴십 프로그램 정보가 담긴 책자가 제공되었다.
이날 개회사에서 셜리 위-추이 미래혁신위원회 위원장은 젊은이들이 성공을 거두기 위해서는 무엇보다 “본인이 진정으로 원하는 것이 무엇인지를 잘 파악해야 한다.”라고 말했다. 덧붙여 “실패를 두려워 말고 과감히 도전하는 "야생오리(Wild Ducks)" 정신이 필요하다”고 조언했다. 또한, “향후 10년은 직업을 과거와 같이 직업을 구하는 것이 아닌 만드는 시대가 될 것이기 때문에 미래를 준비하는 젊은이들은 무엇보다 창조적이고 혁신적일 것이 요구된다”라고 강조했다.
암참의 자선 재단인 미래의 동반자재단 이사장인 제프리 존스의 사회로 시작된 전체 특강(1부)에서는 셜리 위-추이 한국IBM 대표이사(암참 미래혁신위원회 위원장), 임정택 듀폰코리아 사장, 그리고 이희성 인텔코리아 사장이 개인적인 경험을 토대로 글로벌 인재의 조건, 다국적 기업 취업을 위한 준비, 리더십 등에 대해 강의했다.
이어진 멘토링 세션(2부)에서는 9명의 멘토들이 각 세션 참여학생들에게 외국계 기업이 요구하는 글로벌 인재의 자질과 역량에 대해 설명하고 질의응답하는 시간을 가졌다. 앞서 특강을 진행한 3명의 CEO를 포함해 에이미 잭슨 암참 대표, 제프리 존스 미래의동반자재단 이사장, 김옥진 GE코리아 전무이사, 신용숙 한국쓰리엠 상무, 데이비드 워터스 GM코리아 전무/고문 변호사, 이재령 인텔코리아 상무, 전중훤 휴렛팩커드 전무이사 등 10명의 미국계 기업 CEO 및 임원들이 멘토로 참여했다.
본 행사에 앞서 혁신캠프 참여 CEO 및 임원들은 최문순 강원도지사를 예방하고 이어 강원도청 글로벌 사업단과 동해안권 경제자유구역(EFEZ)에 관한 투자간담회를 가졌다. 이 간담회에서 참석자들은 강원도의 투자 환경 및 주요 프로젝트들에 대한 정보를 제공받고 투자?통상협력을 강화를 모색하기로 했다.
암참은 2012년 10월 국내 산업의 경쟁력 강화 및 혁신, 한미 기업들간의 보다 활발한 교류, 그리고 한국 청년들의 글로벌 경쟁력 강화를 지원하기 위해 미래혁신위원회를 출범하였다. 2014년 2월 9일에는 셜리 위-추이 한국 IBM 대표이사가 위원회의 새 위원장으로 선출되었다. 지역경제 활성화와 지역 대학 학생들의 취업 기회를 확대하고자 열린 지난 4회의 암참혁신 캠프는, 충북대학교(2013년 4월), 부산대학교(2013년 9월), 계명대학교 (2013년 11월), 그리고 서울시립대학교(2014년 4월)에서 각각 열렸다. 암참은 앞으로도 지역경쟁력 향상 기반을 다지기 위한 다양한 행사를 기획할 예정이다. 행사와 관련된 자세한 사항은 암참 홈페이지(www.amchamkorea.org)에서 확인할 수 있다.
