AMCHAM Explores the Role of Generative AI in the Acceleration of Digital Transformation

and explore cooperative strategies for partnerships among public and private sectors and academia

May 15, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the AMCHAM Digital Innovation Forum 2023 at the Grand InterContinental Parnas this afternoon. Held for the second time this year, the Forum explored the theme, “The Industry Application and Popularization of Generative AI” in response to the recent booming interest in ChatGPT.

The AMCHAM Digital Innovation Forum was designed to examine the concerns and challenges faced by foreign companies seeking to promote investment and digital growth in Korea. The event also aims to encourage stakeholders to reflect on key issues and exchange ideas on future prospects, and ultimately build policy consensus to help form strategies for partnerships among public and private sectors and academia.

Amid the growing importance of the digital transformation, this year’s Forum highlighted the impact of generative AI (artificial intelligence) technology, exemplified by ChatGPT, on different business sectors and the innovative technology of the IT industry promoting the growth of the digital economy.

In his opening remarks, Chairman Jeffrey Jones of the Partners for the Future Foundation said, “AI is one of the core technologies that is driving forward digital transformation and helping businesses scale up these days. I am confident that today’s event will be a great opportunity for all of us to explore the rapidly evolving landscape and technical capabilities of Generative AI.”

Vice Chairperson Park Sung-Joong of the Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee in the National Assembly, delivered congratulatory remarks. “The government, companies, and foreign organizations in Korea in Korea must work together to actively promote AI human resources development and R&D. Cooperation with global IT companies is crucial,” he said. “As the Vice Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Committee on Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications, I will do my best to support the digital transformation of Korea.”

Andrew Herrup, Minister-Counselor from the U.S. Embassy Seoul, also pledged the U.S. government’s enthusiasm for collaborating with Korea in digital through his congratulatory remarks. He said, “I am pleased to say our leaders get the importance of the digital economy.  They understand that we - the United States and Korea - the public sector and the private sector - need to collaborate to secure and develop the digital technologies that will not only underpin our future economic growth and prosperity, but also improve the quality of life for people around the world.”

The Forum began with a special session on AI Convergence Industry Team Director Oh Kyung-Hwa and Commissioner Kim Jin-cheol of the Gwangju Free Economic Zone Authority. The Gwangju Free Economic Zone Authority attracted the attention of participating companies and officials by promoting Gwangju's attractive investment environment such as AI convergence, future mobility, and smart energy.

Kicking off the industry presentations, Chris Howard, AI/ML Solutions Architect Leader at AWS Asia Pacific & Japan, shared best practices on how to responsibility implement AI/ML services in a presentation under the theme, “Transform your Business with Generative AI.” He said,

Jieun Lee, Chief Technology Officer at IBM Korea, introduced the IBM AI Platform WatsonX in a presentation on the theme, “AI for Business to Accelerate Digital Transformation.” “With the development of foundation models, AI for business is more powerful than ever. WatsonX specializes in providing customizable capabilities for enterprises looking to transition to AI,” she said. “With WatsonX, companies will be able to take control of their data and deploy custom AI capabilities for their entire businesses.”

In a presentation on the theme, “Promote, Regulate, or Both? Finding the Right Balance for Generative AI?”, Brian Chung, Foreign Attorney at Kim & Chang, emphasized the need to find a balance between AI technology innovation and regulation.

Clint Yoo, Co-Founder & Head of Business at Business Canvas, known as Typed, and Rob Lyu, CEO & Founder of Atlas Labs, delivered presentations on the current state of digital innovation, under the context of Generative AI, SaaS and Cloud technology.

Lastly, Woo Jin Jung, Head of Digital Consulting at Megazone Cloud, presented on the topic, “The AI Revolution: The Impact of ChatGPT on Business and Daily Life.”

The event also featured a panel discussion exploring the topic, “The Spread of Generative AI: Industry Application and Policy Proposal.” Adjunct Professor Eric Kim from Hanyang University and Founder and CEO of Datacrunch Global, led an active dialogue featuring the seminar’s speakers and Kwangjin Moon, Associate Research Fellow at the Center for AI & Social Policy at the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI), on the topic, “The Spread of Generative AI: Industry Application and Policy Proposal.”

주한미국상공회의소, 디지털 전환 가속화 속 생성형 AI의 역할 탐색  

- 2023 암참 디지털 혁신 포럼 개최 -  

이해관계자들간 소통 장려 및 정책적 공감대 형성을 통한 민관산학연간 협력 전략 모색

2023년 05월 15일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 금일 오후 그랜드 인터컨티넨탈 서울 파르나스 호텔에서 ‘2023 암참 디지털 혁신 포럼’을 개최했다. 챗혰가 전 세계적 화두로 떠오르면서, 올해로 2회째를 맞은 암참의 이번 디지털 혁신 포럼은 ‘생성형 AI의 산업별 활용과 대중화’를 주제로 열렸다.  

암참은 대한민국의 디지털 성장과 투자를 고민하는 외투기업들이 직면한 우려와 과제를 전달하는 동시에 업계 이해관계자들이 모여 주요 이슈를 돌아보고 향후 전망에 관하여 서로의 의견을 청취하고 수렴하는 자리로 삼아, 이를 통해 이해관계자들간 소통을 장려하고 그에 따른 정책적 공감대 형성을 통해 민관산학연간 협력 전략을 모색하겠다는 방침이다.   

어느 때보다 디지털 전환의 중요성이 대두되고 있는 가운데 암참의 이번 포럼은, 챗GPT로 대표되는 생성형 AI 기술이 다양한 산업에 미치는 영향과 디지털 경제 성장을 촉진하고 있는 IT 산업의 혁신적인 기술에 대해 중점적으로 다루었다.

제프리 존스 암참 미래의동반자재단 이사장은 먼저 개회사를 통해 “AI는 오늘날 디지털 전환과 기업의 성장을 촉진하는 핵심 기술 중 하나.” 라고 말하며, “오늘 이 포럼이 빠르게 진화하고 있는 인공지능의 모습과 기술적 역량을 탐구할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것이라 확신한다.” 라고 덧붙였다.  

국회 과학기술정보방송통신위원회 국민의힘 간사 박성중 의원은 축사를 통해 “정부와 기업, 주한 외국 공관 관계자 등이 협력하여 AI 인력양성과 연구개발을 적극적으로 추진해야 하며, 글로벌 IT 기업들과의 협력도 매우 중요하다.”고 밝혔다. 그는 이어 “국회 과학기술정보방송통신위원회 간사로서 우리나라 디지털 혁신을 위해 최선을 다해 지원하겠다.” 고 말했다.  

또한, 앤드류 헤럽 주한미국대사관 경제공사참사관도 현장에 참석해 축사를 전하며, 디지털 분야에의 한·미 양국 협력의 필요성을 강조했다. 그는, “한·미 양국 리더들이 디지털 경제의 중요성을 인지하고 있음을 기쁘게 생각한다. 미래의 경제 성장과 번영을 뒷받침하고 전 세계 사람들의 삶의 질을 향상시킬 디지털 기술을 확보하고 개발하기 위해 양국의 민관 협력은 필수.” 라고 말했다.  

포럼은 특별 세션으로 준비된 광주경제자유구역청 김진철 청장과 오경화 인공지능 융복합팀장의 ‘광주, AI 융합 산업의 중심지’를 주제로 한 발표로 시작되었다. 광주경자청은 AI융복합‧미래모빌리티‧스마트에너지 등 광주의 매력적인 투자환경을 홍보하여 참가기업과 관계자들의 관심을 모았다.  

이어진 산업계 발표 세션의 첫번째 연사로 나선 크리스 하워드 아마존웹서비시스(AWS) APAC 인공지능/머신러닝 기술 총괄은 ‘생성형 AI를 활용한 비즈니스 혁신’을 주제로 책임감 있게 AI/ML 서비스를 배포하는 방법에 대한 모범 사례 등를 공유하였다.  

이지은 한국IBM 최고기술책임자는 이어, ‘디지털 전환을 위한 AI 기술과 디지털 플랫폼’을 주제로 자체 개발한 인공지능 플랫폼인 ‘왓슨X’ 등을 소개하며, “파운데이션 모델의 개발로 기업용 AI는 그 어느 때보다 강력해졌다. ‘왓슨X’는 AI 전환을 원하는 기업에 맞춤형 기능을 지원하는 기능에 특화되어 있다. 기업들은 ‘왓슨X’를 활용해 데이터를 통제하고, 전체 사업에 맞춤형 AI를 개발할 수 있을 것.” 이라고 말했다.  

또한, 김∙장 법률사무소 정태현 외국변호사는, “AI에 대한 적절한 균형을 찾기 위한 규제와 촉진의 필요성’를 주제로, AI 기술 발전·혁신과 규제 사이에서 적절한 균형점을 찾아야 한다고 강조했다. 

이어진 스타트업 분야 발표 세션에서는 타입드(Typed)로 잘 알려진 비즈니스캔버스의 유민승 총괄과 자연어 처리 기술 AI 시스템 개발 전문 기업인 아틀라스랩스 창업자 류석준 대표이사가 마이크를 이어받았으며, 마지막으로 메가존클라우드 정우진 DX 컨설팅 부문 대표가 “챗GPT로 촉발된 AI의 레볼루션과 업무와 일상에서의 혁신”을 주제로 발표 세션을 마무리했다.  

이날 포럼의 하이라이트는 암참의 마케팅&커뮤니케이션 위원회 의장을 맡고 있는 데이터크런치 글로벌 대표이사 김성수 한양대학교 국제학부 교수가 좌장으로 이끈 패널 토론으로, 정보통신정책연구원(KISDI) 지능정보사회정책센터 문광진 부연구위원, 크리스 하워드 아마존웹서비시즈(AWS) APAC 인공지능/머신러닝 기술 총괄, 김∙장 법률사무소 정태현 외국변호사, 비즈니스캔버스 유민승 총괄이 패널로 참여한 가운데, “생성형 AI의 산업적 활용과 확산에 따른 정책 제안” 을 주제로 건설적이고 통찰력 있는 대화를 주고받았다.
