AMCHAM to host First Blockchain Seminar 2022Seeking improvement to balance between supporting innovation and regulating the market September 20, 2022 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) will host the AMCHAM Blockchain Seminar 2022 on Thursday, September 29, at the Grand Ballroom (3F) of Conrad Seoul Hotel. Held for the first time this year, the seminar is designed to introduce the latest technologies and trends in the blockchain sector and explore of the value of blockchain across all industries. AMCHAM Calls for Sustainable Tax Policies to Accelerate Korea’s Transformation into Regional Headquarters in Asia - AMCHAM Holds a Special Roundtable with NTS Commissioner - September 16, 2022 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) held a special roundtable with National Tax Service (NTS) Commissioner Kim Chang-gi this morning at The Plaza Seoul Hotel. Representatives of foreign invested companies in Korea participated in the roundtable to share challenges and suggestions on Korean tax policies and seek ways to improve the business environment. At the meeting, the delegation requested more favorable tax treatment, sustainable guidelines for foreign direct investments as well as more economic tax incentives for U.S. companies to invest in Korea. AMCHAM Promotes Opportunities in Korea in New Age of Digital Transformation - AMCHAM Digital Innovation Forum 2022 - August 26, 2022 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the AMCHAM Digital Innovation Forum 2022 at the Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel this afternoon. The Digital Innovation Forum 2022, held for the first time this year, explored the theme “Seizing Korea’s Opportunities in the New Age of Digital Transformation.” Representatives from the Korean and U.S. governments, industries and academia joined the seminar to share their insights. AMCHAM organized this forum to celebrate the R&D contributions of global technology companies and their promotion of digital transformation, which has emerged as a critical business strategy for sustainable economic growth. The Forum was designed to be a platform at which stakeholders can exchange ideas, build policy consensus, and explore cooperative strategies for partnerships among public and private sectors and academia. This event also aimed to provide a channel to convey concerns and challenges faced by foreign companies seeking to promote investment and digital growth in Korea, as well as opportunities to engage and network with industry stakeholders. In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Digitalization has quickly become a fundamental driver behind the continuous shift in the global economy. It is a critical business strategy for sustainable economic growth for all our businesses, big or small.” He added, “AMCHAM strongly believes that Korea is well placed to emerge as a regional digital hub for Asia Pacific. In this context, it is critically important for Korea to create a sustainable regulatory environment where all digital service providers could thrive long-term.” H.E. Jung Chung-rae, Chair of Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee of the National Assembly, kicked off the forum with congratulatory remarks. The Hon. Philip Goldberg, U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, remarked in his congratulatory remarks, “The United States and Korea are committed to an open, free, interoperable, and secure Internet. The digital economy is the single most important driver of innovation, growth, and job creation in our two nations – and indeed many others. It has transformed how we live, and how we do business.” “South Korea and Indiana have many common values, interests and goals,” said Governor of the State of Indiana Eric J. Holcomb. “Our economic and educational ties continue to grow year after year with always a focus on today, tomorrow and the future of industry. Many more exciting opportunities lie ahead of us both to lengthen and strengthen our many bonds, building upon the cherished partnerships we already share.” Agne Makauskaite, Head of Regulated Industry and Public Policy, Asia Pacific and Japan, of Amazon Web Services, delivered the first presentation. She described the acceleration of the digital transformation using the public cloud. Harrison Kim, Country Director of Google Korea, introduced the influence of Korean culture on the global market as well as Google’s various efforts to support this influence. He explained that Google supports Korean companies and people by providing various global products and Android ecosystems. “Google will continue responsible innovation of products and services and strengthen partnerships with Korean companies so that diverse Korean content, K-culture and innovation efforts can come to fruition worldwide.” Dr. Michael Mandel, Vice President and Chief Economist at Progressive Policy Institute, presented the results from his new report titled, “Korean App Economy Update 2022.” He estimated that the Korean App Economy includes 516,000 workers as of July 2022. The report found that Korea's App Economy is highly globally competitive compared to other countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom. To maintain this strong position, Dr. Mandel notes that regulators should not underestimate the importance of security and privacy considerations. Sungho Cha, PS Commercial Manager of HP Korea, said, “The hybrid work environment has already become common in some companies. Given the growing demand for hybrid work among the MZ Generation, where the proportion of corporate members is increasing, it is the task of companies and governments to realize the best work environment where higher levels of collaboration are possible anytime, anywhere.” He added, “Now that digital transformation, a survival condition for companies, is progressing faster than ever, enterprise PCs that can support this change are an essential element of innovation. HP continues to introduce a range of PC product lines that have strengths in security, performance, and mobility while meeting changing work environments through user-centric innovations.” The highlight of the seminar was a panel discussion led by Sun Hee Kim, Partner at Yulchon LLC and Co-Chair of the AMCHAM ICT Committee, on the various opportunities in Korea in the new age of digital transformation. AMCHAM Completes First Washington D.C. Doorknock Visit in Three Years to Discuss Indo-Pacific Economic Framework through Highest Level Meetings in History - Delegation participated in 21 meetings with high-ranking government officials to advocate for stronger U.S.-Korea economic partnership - Emphasized goal to make Korea the top destination for regional headquarters across Asia August 18, 2022 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) concluded their AMCHAM Doorknock visit to Washington D.C. The trip ran from July 27-29 and included a total of 21 functions and meetings with U.S. administrative agencies, Congress and think tanks, to discuss the U.S.-Korea economic partnership. In their meetings, the AMCHAM delegation emphasized the need to prioritize Korea as a key ally in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and outlined concrete and strategic ways in which the U.S. could deepen its political, economic, technological and cultural ties with South Korea at federal, state, and municipal levels. The delegation covered the following topics: Economic Security The AMCHAM delegation highlighted the significant role that the KORUS FTA has played in promoting bilateral trade and encouraged the U.S. government to consider reinforcing the IPEF with market access and tariff reduction. Among the four pillars of IPEF, the delegation identified supply chain as an area critical to economic security and one in which AMCHAM could be a useful resource in U.S.-Korea dialogue. AMCHAM aims to create an IPEF Working Group that will work closely with the U.S. and Korean governments. Furthermore, AMCHAM discussed its key initiative to make Korea the top destination for regional headquarters across Asia. In this context, the delegation shared concerns on Korea-unique regulations such as the Cloud Security Assurance Program and IP protection and urged the U.S. government to consider these issues in IPEF discussions. U.S.-Korea Investment AMCHAM met with members of U.S. Congress to discuss the remarkable growth in U.S.-Korea investment. Given the diverse set of infrastructure, sectors and talent resources across different states, the delegation discussed unique opportunities to secure Korean investments in strategic industries. The delegates urged the lawmakers to provide more economic incentives for Korean companies to invest in the U.S. to sustain investment growth, including the need to increase the number of U.S. work visas available for Koreans. AMCHAM also reaffirmed the U.S. government’s focus on increasing investment of U.S. companies of all sizes, including SMEs, in Korea. Given that IPEF will likely involve SMEs, AMCHAM urged the U.S. government to leverage AMCHAM’s American Business Center (ABC) as the on-the-ground resource to facilitate B2B discussions and market entry logistics. A strategic partnership between the U.S. Department of Commerce and AMCHAM, the ABC program was relaunched in 2022 to assist American SMEs entering the Korean market. “It is very meaningful that we were able to resume our Doorknock visits in a time where strong U.S.-Korea bilateral partnership is more urgent than ever,” said James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM. “As U.S.-Korea ties develop further into a comprehensive strategic alliance, I hope that AMCHAM will play a bigger role as a bridge-builder between the two countries going forward.” “AMCHAM will continue to work closely with the two governments to further strengthen U.S.-Korea economic collaboration,” he added. AMCHAM pledged to cultivate the next generation of U.S. exporters to Korea, including minority communities and SMEs, in close collaboration with newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Philip Goldberg and the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. The delegation also promised to help champion the U.S. government’s focus on equality and diversity across the AMCHAM platform, and to steer more U.S. SMEs to critical export markets such as Korea. This is AMCHAM’s first visit to Washington D.C. since 2019. The program featured high-level meetings with seven U.S. administrative agencies, eight members of Congress representing different states (six Senators and two Representatives), the Korean Ambassador to the U.S., and three major think tanks. After a two-year hiatus caused by COVID-19, AMCHAM will resume the “Doorknock” program this year from Wednesday, July 27, to Friday, July 29. AMCHAM to Explore Solutions for Sustainable Growth in the ESG Era - AMCHAM Sustainability Seminar 2022 - June 9, 2022 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the Sustainability Seminar 2022 at the Conrad Hotel Seoul this morning. AMCHAM organized this seminar to find more realistic countermeasures to realize risk factors and achieve sustainability for each part of E (environment), S (social), and G (governance) that companies may face. The Sustainability Seminar, which marks its fourth anniversary this year, explored the theme “Solutions for ESG Risk Factors that Companies Need to Overcome in 2022.” Representatives from the Korean and U.S. governments, industries and academia joined the seminar to share their insight. In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Today, we are very fortunate to have an outstanding lineup of speakers from public and private sectors to guide us through the ESG solutions and strategies.” He added, “In the recent summit between President Yoon and President Biden, the two leaders emphasized the importance of creating global supply chains that are sustainable and addressing climate change as part of the global commitment to ensuring energy security.” He continued, “As a result, there is now more focus and scrutiny with which companies are trying to improve practices in ESG aspects. AMCHAM Explores Opportunities to Arise from the Development of Metaverse - AMCHAM - The Korea Herald Metaverse Forum 2022 - May 2, 2022 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) and the Korea Herald co-hosted the Metaverse Forum 2022 on May 2, at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. Held in a hybrid online-offline format, representatives from the U.S. and Korean business communities and government officials gathered to discuss on the rise of the Metaverse and its implications for the future. This event, held for the first time this year and hosted by Meta, crypto.com, Kim & Chang, aims to examine the need to create a metaverse ecosystem that facilitates business innovation and sustainable growth amid the acceleration of a virtual digital society in which metaverse becomes more prevalent across all industries. This event is also designed to explore a policy consensus between public-private sector and academia and seek cooperation between officials. In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Now in the post-COVID era, we are seeing new business models emerge. With the advancement of technology, the concept of the metaverse no longer remains an elusive dream.” He continued, “Newly emerging metaverse technologies are expected to be integrated into a wide range of industry sectors. It will fundamentally change the way we work and interact in our daily lives.” Choi, Jin-young, CEO of The Korea Herald, also delivered opening remarks. “South Korea and the U.S. have been closely cooperating in the most valuable industrial fields such as semiconductor, electric vehicle and battery, and the two are leading the global industrial trend.” He added, “And through this Korea Herald and AMCHAM Forum, we hope to discover the future direction of the bilateral economic ties, in this fast-emerging technology -- metaverse.” H.E.
