AMCHAM Korea Visits Washington D.C. to Advocate Korea as a Robust Partner to the U.S.

(한글은 아래 참조) Mar 9, 2016 (Seoul) - The leaders from the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) will visit Washington D.C. next week to meet with the Obama Administration and members of Congress as part of its annual “Doorknock” program during March 14-17, 2016. Through these meetings, the delegation will advocate Korea as an important economic partner to the United States. This year’s delegates consist of James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman and current President, CEO and Chairman of GM Korea, John Schuldt, President of AMCHAM Korea, David Ruch, Former Chairman of AMCHAM Korea and Country Manager of United Airlines, Inc., Jeffrey Jones, Former Chairman of AMCHAM Korea and Chairman of the Partners for the Future Foundation, Swami Raote, Area Vice President, North Asia of Johnson & Johnson Medical, and Inbom Choi, Special Advisor of AMCHAM Korea and Advisor of GE Korea. The delegates have secured 30+ meetings involving senior officials and policy makers from the White House, Departments of State, Commerce, Treasury, U.S. Trade Representative, Federal Trade Commission and other research institutes. The delegation will provide updates on progress made to date involving recent regulatory reforms initiated by President Park Administration. They will also discuss Korean government’s commitment and continuing efforts in deregulation along with labor reforms which will ultimately help make Korea much more competitive. In addition, the delegates will discuss opportunities to improve transparency and predictability as an engine for increasing foreign direct investment. And lastly, the delegates will also showcase the benefits and success stories of KORUS FTA, pending issues and the discussions pertaining to Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). John Schuldt has lived in Seoul for more than 3 years and joins AMCHAM from Ford Motor Company where he most recently served as Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. In his 30 year career, Mr. Schuldt has held a variety of executive positions in the United States and Asia representing corporate interests in developing mutually beneficial business relationships between customers and distribution channels.Having worked for a Fortune 10 company, Mr. Schuldt has extensive experience in many aspects of business: sales, marketing, finance, customer relationship management, manufacturing, and purchasing. AMCHAM President, Amy Jackson, to leave Korea

AMCHAM announced today that its President, Amy Jackson, will leave Korea in January of next year to take a new job in the Asia-Pacific region, the details of which will be announced at a later time. ?Ms. Jackson has served as the AMCHAM President since August of 2009. With AMCHAM’s recent celebration of its 60th anniversary in Korea as a backdrop, Ms. Jackson has helped position AMCHAM well for its next 60 years. AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar 2015

?(한글은 아래참조)July 10, 2015 (SEOUL) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the sixth annua?l “AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar" on Friday, July 10 at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. Over 300 representatives from a variety of domestic and foreign healthcare-related companies, health organizations, government agencies and other stakeholders in the sector gathered to discuss the theme of “Successful innovation ? what is the next paradigm?” The event started with congratulatory remarks from government leaders including the Honorable Chun-jin Kim, a member of the National Assembly and Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee and Marc Knapper, Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Seoul. Representatives from renowned organizations such as the IBM Watson Group, the Korean Research-based Pharma Industry Association (KRPIA), Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), etc. also shared their insight through presentations and panel discussions. Attendees discussed various global case studies and their significance to the Korean healthcare industry under the themes of “Ecosystem for Sustainable Innovation” and “From Cure to Prevention” later that day. Compared to other countries where regulatory reforms are readily keeping up with technological advancements, Korea is falling behind in innovation and technological development because of excessive and unreasonable regulations. The domestic digital healthcare industry is missing its window of opportunity because of legal restrictions.”In the afternoon, panelists discussed the elements of an innovation-friendly ecosystem. AMCHAM General Membership Meeting with Paul E. Jacobs

Jacobs, Executive Chairman of Qualcomm Incorporated and Chairman of U.S.-Korea Business Council, at the Grand Hyatt Seoul on June 30, 2015.Dr. Jacobs served as CEO from July 2005 to March 2014, and was appointed chairman of Qualcomm in 2009. He has been with the company for over 20 years. Under his leadership, Qualcomm released the first Palm OS-based smartphone and included global positioning system capabilities in cellphones. AMCHAM CEO Servers' Night

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the “11th AMCHAM CEO Servers’ Night” on June 3rd, 2015 at The Park Ballroom on the 5th floor of the Conrad Seoul. The Partners for the Future Foundation (PFF), the charitable arm of AMCHAM Korea, has hosted this unique event to raise scholarship for Korean university students from unemployed families. On this special night, CEOs from leading multinational companies put on aprons instead of business suits becoming waiters for the event serving the meals and wine to their employees, families, business partners and friends. The staff at Conrad Seoul trained the CEOs on basic serving manners for the event. In his welcoming remarks, Jeffery Jones, Chairman of The Partners for the Future Foundation said “Tonight, your small donation can make a huge impact to the society. The Partners for the Future Foundation aims to have a bigger impact through a small amount of money.” Proceeds from this event will go to the PFF to award scholarships to university students in need of financial supports.On the event, around 130 guests enjoyed a four-course dinner served by their bosses. After the main event, participating CEOs were given various entertaining awards; Preston Draper, President of Costco Korea won the ‘Best Wine Seller Award’ and Eun-Mi Chae, Managing Director of FedEx Korea won the ‘Most Guests Award.’ The ‘Most Energetic CEO Award’ for CEO whose pedometer recorded the highest number went to Eun-Mi Chae and David Pacey, President & General Manager of Grand Hyatt Seoul. AMCHAM Korea celebrates 3rd year anniversary of KORUS FTA

(한글은 아래 참조)SEOUL, March 16, 2015 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) marked the 3rd anniversary of the landmark Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) with the following statement:The year 2014 marked the best year since the KORUS FTA was implemented in March 2012. According to the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) while the trade volume between the two countries increased by only around 1 percent year-on-year in the first 2 years of implementation due to many factors, the trade volume increased by 11.6 percent year-on-year in 2014, reaching a total of 115.6 billion U.S. dollars. Korean exports to the U.S. increased in many sectors including in the automotive, auto parts, and wireless communication devices sectors. U.S. exports also grew particularly in areas such as automotives, agriculture, and petroleum products. Investment between the two countries also recorded a marked increase. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, following the implementation of KORUS, U.S. investment in Korea has increased such that the United States is Korea’s number one investor and the source of over 20 percent of FDI in Korea. The U.S. has been Korea’s number one FDI destination for the last 3 years. U.S. investment in Korea was focused in the services and manufacturing sectors. Korea's investment in the U.S. was largely focused in the services and infrastructure sector. Reflecting on the three years of implementation of KORUS, AMCHAM Chairman James Kim stated that: "Clearly, Korea and the United States have much to be proud of and to celebrate on the 3rd anniversary of the KORUS FTA. Not only have we seen a notable increase in sales of U.S. products in Korea whose tariffs came down under the FTA, we are also seeing a number of less quantifiable but important benefits from this gold standard agreement. For example, many Korean government ministries have made greater efforts to seek U.S. stakeholders’ views as they develop new policies and regulations across sectors. This has helped increase the transparency and predictability of the marketplace as well as resulted in sounder public policy.” AMCHAM appreciates our ongoing dialogue with Korean trade officials. However, still a number of FTA implementation issues remain, key of these relate to commitments Korea made in the areas of IPR, financial services, autos, and the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors. AMCHAM Chairman Kim noted that "Although we have seen greater attention to the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, which of course also strongly benefits the quickly growing number of Korean companies with innovative ideas they want to protect at home and abroad, Korea still needs to make additional improvement to be on par with the norm in OECD countries."Related to financial services, while Korea implemented new regulations intended to allow financial companies to use their offshore data processing centers as agreed in KORUS, the new system is cumbersome and time consuming and a fewer number of approvals than expected have been granted. In the automotive realm concerns also remain. In particular, U.S. automotive companies hope to engage in a more specific and constructive dialogue with regulators regarding details of the new CO2 standards that the Korean government plans to put into effect in 2020, that are arguably the most stringent in the world. Related to pricing and reimbursement policies for innovative pharmaceutical and medical device products, we are pleased to see positive signs of improvement recently. However, significant barriers to patient access to new drugs and technologies remain that we hope will be further improved. A system which better rewards innovation will be an accelerator for Korea in achieving its goal of promoting Korea’s domestic healthcare industry. AMCHAM President Amy Jackson stated that: "Discussions of these and other FTA implementation issues are continuing in a variety of settings, including under the many FTA committees and working groups set up under KORUS. AMCHAM Korea is very hopeful that we will have a positive and mutually beneficial outcome on these priority FTA issues in the near future. Korea has achieved the enviable goal of becoming an FTA hub in Asia. The new opportunities available to Korean companies, both big and small from these new FTAs, are quite exciting and will help propel the Korean economy into the future. For more information, please contact:Roxie HwangAMCHAM Korea(822) 6201-2238?? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------암참, 한미 FTA 3주년 축하?주한미국상공회의소(이하 ‘암참’)은 한미 자유무역협정(이하 ‘한미 FTA’) 발효 3주년을 축하하며 다음을 전했다: 2012년 3월 한미 FTA 발표 이래 2014년은 최고의 해로 기록되었다. 최근 한국무역협회 발표에 의하면 한미 FTA 발효 이후 2012~2013년에는 여러 요인들로 인해 한미 양국 무역이 1%대 증가율로 소폭 성장하는데 그쳤으나 발효 3년차인 2014년에는 교역량 1,155.7억 달러를 달성하며 전년 대비 11.6%의 증가율을 기록하였다. 한국의 대미 수출 품목으로는 자동차, 자동차 부품, 무선통신기기 등에서 증가세가 두드러졌고, 미국의 대한 수출 품목으로는 자동차, 농축산물, 석유제품 등이 증가율을 나타내었다. 양국간의 투자 또한 증가세를 기록하였다. 산업통상자원부 자료에 의하면 한미 FTA 이후, 미국의 대한 외국인직접투자 비중이 20%대로 증가하여 국내 투자비중 1위를 기록하였고, 한국의 해외투자 역시 FTA 발표 3년 간 대미투자가 가장 높은 비중을 차지하는 등 양국 간의 투자도 더욱 활성화되었다. 미국의 국내 투자는 서비스 및 제조업에서 두드러졌고, 한국의 대미 투자는 서비스 및 인프라 분야 비중이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 김 제임스 암참 회장은 “FTA 3주년은 마땅히 한미 양국이 자랑스러워할 만한 업적이다. 관세가 인하/철폐된 미국 상품들의 국내 수요가 증가하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, ‘골드 스탠더드’로 여겨지는 본 협정으로 인해 수치화되지 않는 긍정적인 움직임들이 관찰된다. 일례로 한국 각계의 정책 결정자들이 정책 입안 시 미국 업계와 보다 활발하게 소통하고 있으며, 이로 인해 정책의 투명성과 예측 가능성이 제고되었다”고 전했다. 암참은 한국정부의 통상관계자 분들과의 지속적인 소통에 감사를 표한다. 하지만 여전히 한미 FTA와 관련한 지적재산권, 금융, 자동차, 제약 및 의료기기 분야에서 일부 이행 과제들이 남아있다. “최근 국내 기업들의 혁신기술이 국내는 물론 해외로 진출하는 가운데 한국정부는 지적재산권 보호에 박차를 가하고 있지만, 이는 아직 OECD 평균에 못 미치는 실정”이라고 김 회장은 덧붙였다. 금융 분야에서는 금융회사의 정보처리 및 전산설비 위탁허용 절차의 간소화를 위한 제도가 마련되었음에도 불구하고, 복잡한 승인 절차로 인하여 승인건수가 처음 기대에 못 미치는 등 기업들의 제도 이용이 원활하지 못하다. 자동차 산업 부분에 여전히 과제들이 남아있다. 특히 사실상 국제적으로 가장 엄격한 2020 온실가스/연비 기준의 세부내용 개선을 위해 보다 건설적인 대화를 할 수 있기를 희망한다. 제약 및 의료기기 분야의 가격정책에 있어서도 혁신의 가치가 보다 반영되어야 하며, 그런 차원에서 긍정적인 방향으로 정책이 논의되는 것을 환영하지만, 신약에 대한 환자의 접근성 강화를 위해 보다 많은 제도 개선이 이루어지기를 바란다고 전했다. 에이미 잭슨 암참 대표는 “FTA의 완전한 이행을 위해 여러 위원회가 지속적으로 개최되고 있으며, 암참은 한미 FTA의 남은 이행과제들이 조속한 시일 내에 원만하게 해결되기를 바란다. 한국은 아시아의 FTA 허브로, 국내 대기업 및 중소기업들에게 새로운 길이 열리고 있어 이러한 기회들이 한국 경제에 활력소가 될 것으로 보인다. 하지만 기체결된 FTA는 물론 향후 추진하는 환태평양경제동반자협정(TPP) 등의 맥락에서 진정한 양자 및 다자 무역의 선도국가로 자리매김하기 위해서는 FTA 이행 과제들이 신속하게 해결되도록 보다 많은 노력을 기울여야 할 것이다”라고 밝혔다.***보도 자료 문의사항:황예진 과장주한미국상공회의소(AMCHAM/암참) (822) 6201-2238
