AMCHAM reinforces Korea-U.S. relations through annual Doorknock

April 29, 2019 ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a Press Conference to cover the annual Washington, DC Doorknock on April 29, at AMCHAM’s office. AMCHAM leadership, represented by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors Jeffrey Jones and Former Chairman of AMCHAM David Ruch elaborated the specifics of what AMCHAM delegation proposed and discussed during their Doorknock visit to Washington D.C. from April 8 to 11. Chairman & CEO Kim began the conference by highlighting the key messages that were delivered to the key administration officials, congressional members and think-tank experts. He detailed that 1) Korea is a “great actor” against the other major US trading partners given that the deficit (in goods) has declined steadily, 2) KORUS FTA 2.0 is a great agreement to further help improve trade and we have the scorecard to show it, and 3) Section 232 is still an unresolved matter which AMCHAM has gone on record that Korea should be exempted from it. Following Chairman Kim’s remarks, Chairman of Board of Governors Jones elaborated on the two major factors for the success of a balanced bilateral trade. The first is that Korea has been a good actor on trade. Korea is United States' sixth largest trading partner and the U.S. goods trade deficit with Korea fell from $27.7 billion in 2016, to $22.9 billion in 2017, to $17.9 billion in 2018. The second factor is the ratification of the amended KORUS FTA. As part of this year’s Doorknock, AMCHAM delivered the first-ever KORUS FTA Implementation Scorecard which monitors the implementation progress and outlines the issues that remain to be addressed. “The Scorecard will set a benchmark for full and faithful implementation to further improve KORUS and strengthen our economic partnership,” said Chairman Jones. “We hope it will provide a roadmap for the two governments to partner with the global business community to develop a more vital and globally competitive business environment in Korea. Former Chairman David Ruch explained the importance of trade in services as it is a crucial part of the economic and commercial relationship that benefits both countries. U.S. service exports to Korea have increased 81% since 2011 and the U.S. has a $12.1 billion surplus in services. Another highlight is travel and tourism. Korea is the number 4 source of overseas visitors to the United States and travel services in U.S. increased by 84%. According to the latest data, 2.3 million Koreans visit the U.S. a year, spending $10.9 billion. Lastly, Chairman Kim announced the action plans for the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed between the U. S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) and AMCHAM to support export growth of U.S. small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to South Korea. As part of this partnership, AMCHAM will launch the "AMCHAM Korea SME Center" within this year to offer on-the-ground resources for information and solutions when entering the Korean market. April 11, 2019 ? A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) has been signed between the U. S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) and The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) to support export growth of U.S. small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to South Korea. This MOA signing is the first of its kind between ITA and a foreign-based American Chamber of Commerce for the specific purpose of expanding the number of U.S. small businesses exporting to another country. South Korea is currently the sixth largest trading partner in goods to the U.S. and is ably placed to support U.S. SMEs seeking an international market. “It is a pleasure to welcome AMCHAM Korea to the Department of Commerce as we work together on our mutual goal of increasing the number of U.S. small businesses that export,” said Under Secretary Gilbert Kaplan. “We are approached every day by small businesses, many of whom are not household names and are looking for ways to enter into new markets. Through this strategic partnership, we will have the opportunity to combine efforts and maximize investment for U.S. SMEs in Korea.” Through the ITA-AMCHAM Korea partnership, a "U.S.-Korea SME Center" will be established to support U.S. businesses with on-the-ground resources for information and solutions for entering the Korean market. The SME Center will also provide assistance in the areas of business, location, marketing, government procurement, and trade missions. AMCHAM Hosts Special Luncheon with Seoul Mayor for the First Time in 10 Years

March 25, 2019 (Seoul) ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted a Special Luncheon with Mayor Park Won-soon of Seoul Metropolitan Government at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. They discussed policy measures for attracting and boosting foreign investment in the future. With around 100 AMCHAM members and government officials in attendance, this was AMCHAM’s first meeting with the mayor of Seoul in ten years. The last was a meeting with Mayor Oh Se-hoon in 2008. AMCHAM and the Seoul Metropolitan Government discussed challenges faced by U.S. companies entering Korea as well as ways to promote investment. AMCHAM Promotes Collaboration between Foreign Chambers of Commerce and Korean Government

November 30, 2018 (Seoul) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the AMCHAM Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2018 on November 30, 2018, at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. Around 150 distinguished guests, including officials from the U.S., Korean and European governments and CEOs of foreign companies, attended the event. The first of its kind, the seminar discussed various current issues in the Korean business environment and explored measures for facilitating increased foreign investment into Korea. The leaders of five major foreign chambers of commerce in Korea, including James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, Sean Blakeley, CEO of the British Chamber of Commerce in Korea (BCCK), Christoph Heider, President of the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ECCK), David-Pierre Jalicon, Chairman of the French Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), and Barbara Zollman, President & CEO of the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KGCCI), gathered to discuss issues such as the strengths of the Korean market, the Korean economic outlook, Korea’s regulatory environment, fair trade, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, labor regulations, and more. They signed a Joint Statement pledging to fully cooperate with the Korean government to resolve these issues in mutually beneficial ways.
