Sung Kim earned his degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (B.A.), the Loyola Marymount University (J.D.), and the London School of Economics (LL.M.). He started his career as a public servant as a U.S. prosecutor. With his appointment as a diplomat in 1998, Mr. Kim started to gain experience as the first Korean-American to serve as head of the U.S. State Department's South Korea bureau. In 2008, the then President Barack Obama appointed him as a special envoy for the six-party talks.
Mr. Kim became the first Korean-American to serve as the U.S. ambassador to South Korea in 2011. Later, he assumed such positions as U.S. special representative for North Korea Policy and acting assistant secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs and has since worked as a key expert on East Asia in the United States.
Amidst the recent international environment with increasing uncertainties and the complex global crisis, Mr. Kim is providing his advice to effectively support overseas operations of the Korean companies that look to expand their market and explore investment opportunities.
With various experiences and abundant knowledge accumulated through his 40-year career as a diplomat, Sungnam Lim provides, as global advisor of Bae, Kim & Lee LLC, useful advice on a wide variety of international issues and cross-border cases, including but not limited to, Korean companies' outbound investment as well as foreign direct investment in Korea.
Before joining the firm, Mr. Lim served as first vice minister of Foreign Affairs of Korea for about three years. He also served in Jakarta, Indonesia as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at the Mission of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN, and prior to that, served in London as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northen Ireland. Besides, he served in Washington, Beijing, New York (UN), Tokyo and Taipei.
