TOPIC ?

“The Costs of Data Localisation: Friendly Fire on Economic Recovery?”?

Dear AMCHAM Members,

From Flitto to Psy, the Internet as a platform for commerce and creativity has transformed the way in which companies and people engage with the world. Part of this stems from the ability of data to flow freely across borders. However, when laws or regulations mandating that data be stored locally come into effect, they threaten the free flow of information across borders, raise operating costs for businesses, and undermine the open web.

The European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE) has analysed the impact of current or proposed data localization measures on Korea’s economy, revealing the true cost across a range of industries of enforcing such measures. Economists from ECIPE will be in Seoul to discuss their findings and assess the implications of such measures on a globally interconnected economy like Korea. We welcome you to attend and learn about the impact of data localization regulations.

Best regards,

AMCHAM Government & International Affairs Committee Co-Chairs
