Message from the Co-Chair

NOW is a critical time for Korea’s healthcare ecosystem. On the one hand, communicable disease rates have fallen, life expectancy is higher and access to medical care is the best it's ever been. Conversely, medical cost inflation is running at historically high levels (~13% YoY), the population is ageing the fastest (1:5 >65Yo by 2025), birthrates are at the lowest (~1.0) amongst OECD countries and high incidences of mental ill-health continues to be under-acknowledged and under-treated. Health taxes (NHI contributions) are predicted to ramp up significantly from 6.4%, the government is now spending >8% of GDP on Healthcare, growing at an alarming rate of 20% pa. The Korean Healthcare ecosystem is clearly at an important cross-roads and becoming increasingly unsustainable, action needs to be taken sooner rather than later by all the key stakeholders, the government, insurers, medical providers and consumers.
Our inaugural AMCHAM Korea Population Health & Technology Committee welcomes two special guest speakers, firstly Professor Sok-Chul Hong of Seoul National University as well as Dr Sneh Khemka, President of Population Health at Aetna International to share some of their research and insights on the challenges and opportunities in Korean Healthcare. Hope you can join us for this important discussion and better yet, be part of the solution.

Best regards,

AMCHAM Population Health & Technology Committee Chair
Damian Delaney
