 TOPIC

“Liberalization of the legal services market in Korea
- Looking back at the past 3 years and looking forward to phase 3"

Dear AMCHAM Members,

It has been just over three years since Laurie Lebrun, an experienced international transactional lawyer and partner of Major, Lindsey & Africa, a global legal recruiting firm, gave a presentation to our group addressing the potential impact of the EU and US Free Trade Agreements on the legal market in Korea. We have asked Ms. Lebrun to return to speak about what has indeed happened during the first three years of the liberalization process and to analyze what may happen in the years ahead. Since her last presentation, Laurie has remained actively involved in the legal market in Seoul, assisting international law firms and multi-national companies in hiring lawyers in Korea.

Based in Tokyo, Ms. Lebrun has a unique perspective on the upcoming Phase 3 of the liberalization of the legal market in Korea, as she has seen first-hand how the regulatory environment impacts the development of joint enterprises between domestic and international law firms. Ms. Lebrun will discuss:

? her observations regarding what types of collaboration between Korean and foreign qualified lawyers might be most successful in the future in Korea;
? regulatory pitfalls which Korea should try to avoid;
? the role members of the American Chamber of Commerce can play in advocating for the most sensible regulatory framework; and
? recommendations for lawyers and law firms considering what steps, if any, to take during Phase 3.

Ms. Lebrun will also share her predictions regarding what the Seoul legal market might look like in the future. We are pleased to invite you to join us for what we hope will be an informative and interactive discussion.

Best regards,

AMCHAM Legal Affairs Committee Co-Chairs
