TOPIC

“Unmanned Aircraft Systems (aka “Drones”) - Legal Issues in Korea and the United States”

Dear AMCHAM Members,

?

?Once considered toys for children and hobbyists, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been developed by governments into flying instruments of war. In recent years, Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly known as “drones,” have been used to lethal effect in aerial warfare. Now, smaller versions of UAS’s are commercially available for both personal and business use. The proliferation of these small, remotely-piloted flying objects has raised a host of new legal and regulatory issues. Public safety, privacy, air traffic control, and even tax issues have captured the attention of legislators and regulators.

This panel will address the rapidly developing area of UAS law in the United States and Korea. Our panelists, Phillip F. Shinn, Senior Partner with Lewis Roca Rothgerber, LLP, and Dong Hwan Kim, a Korea-licensed lawyer at Lee International IP & Law Group, will focus on the myriad legal issues raised by the expanding commercial UAS market. Commercial UAS operations already have implications for the laws of aviation, privacy, intellectual property, torts, and government regulation, and the industry is still in its relatively early stages. Join AMCHAM’s Legal Affairs Committee as we look ahead to the future legal impact of these drones.
