Sun Hee Kim is a partner at Yulchon who focuses her practice on cybersecurity and data privacy matters, as well as M&As and investments, particularly for companies in the technology sector and businesses that actively utilize personal data or big data. For more than ten years, Sun Hee has regularly advised global companies on all aspect of the data privacy issues, including cross-border data transfers, use of cloud computing, and reducing regulatory and liability risks on privacy and data security issues by establishing a data management system that is in compliance with the data protection laws, both in Korea and around the world where the companies do business. Currently, Sun Hee is also active in advising the companies on reaching compliance with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. Sun Hee is particularly experienced in advising on data protection issues in the context of business transfers/acquisitions and M&A transactions, such as conducting due diligence to ensure the integrity and legality of the personal data of the target companies, and assisting with post-merger integrations. Recently, she has advised two prominent Korean insurance companies on various regulatory and privacy issues in the process of creating a consolidated IT system for handling customer’s personal credit information in view of their merger. Sun Hee is the Website Officer of the International Bar Association, and regularly speaks at various conferences and seminars on cross-border M&A, cybersecurity and data privacy issues. Her recent publications include “Getting the Deal Through ? Cybersecurity 2019 Korea Chapter” (published by Law Business Research), and “Self-Driving Cars: New standard for data privacy internationally and in Korea” (published by International Bar Association, Communications Law Newsletter June 2016 edition).
With a mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more, Kumsun Kim provides legal support to Microsoft’s enterprise business in Korea, focusing on supporting its customers with their digital transformation journey. Her main job is to help customers better understand the Microsoft Cloud through the lenses of cybersecurity, privacy and regulatory compliance. As adoption of cutting-edge digital technology such as AI and IoT requires a careful understanding of the technology, customer’s needs and circumstances, as well as the legal and regulatory environment, Kumsun Kim frequently engages customers’ legal and compliance teams to enhance mutual learning when she’s not negotiating cloud computing transactions with them. Prior to Microsoft, she worked at law firms in Korea, where she managed privacy, software license, copyright related matters and M&A transactions.
