AMCHAM Holds Policy Talks with Han Ki Jeong, Chairperson of the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC)

Discussing the Direction of the KFTC's Key Business Directions in 2024 for Building a Fair Market Economy,

and Exploring Ways to Enhance Korea's Competitiveness as a Business Hub in the Asia-Pacific region

March 07, 2024 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim), held policy talks with Han Ki Jeong, Chairperson of the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) today.

The meeting was held to introduce the KFTC's key business directions for 2024 and explore ways to enhance Korea's competitiveness as a business hub in the Asia-Pacific region. Held at the Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel, the event attended by over 100 representatives of domestic and foreign companies, including members of the AMCHAM Board of Governors.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “AMCHAM deeply appreciates Chairperson Han’s willingness to join us today to share his vision for competition regulation.” He continued “To unlock Korea’s true potential, it is imperative to ensure a fair and transparent business environment for both domestic and foreign companies. Our survey shows that an unpredictable regulatory landscape is the primary concern for the AMCHAM business community.” “In this regard”, he emphasized, “it is crucial for the Korean Government, including the KFTC, to take sufficient time to engage in thorough consultations with the industry before introducing new legislation, such as the Online Platform Act.”

He added, “AMCHAM remains committed to playing a pivotal role as a bridge and communication channel between the Korean Government and the global business community in the ongoing dialogue.”

Chairperson Han Ki Jeong said that he plans to push for four key tasks this year with the goal of “building a fair market economy that supports people's livelihoods and innovation.” He said that he anticipated continued difficulties economic entities' due to high inflation and high interest rates this year, and that more active policy alternatives are needed for the deepening of the digital economy.

He explained the KFTC's key core tasks include ▲establishing a fair-trade order that supports the dynamic economy, expanding the infrastructure for fair trade policy promotion; ▲ establishing a stable trade foundation for SMEs and small businesses; ▲creating a transaction environment that safeguards consumer interests, and ▲establishing reasonable regulations for large business groups.

Chairperson Han concluded by emphasizing, “This year, the KFTC will strive to establish a fair market economy system that is the basis for economic stability and market innovation of people's livelihoods.”

한기정 공정거래위원장 초청 특별 강연 개최 

‘민생·혁신 지원하는 공정한 시장경제 구축’을 위한 2024년 공정위 주요 업무 추진 방향 청취 및 

아·태지역 비즈니스 허브로서의 한국의 경쟁력 향상을 위한 방안 모색

2024년 03월 07일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 오후 한기정 공정거래위원회 (이하 공정위) 위원장을 초청하여 특별 강연을 열었다.  

이번 자리는 2024년 공정위가 추진하고 있는 주요 업무 방향을 소개하고 아·태지역 비즈니스 허브로서의 한국의 경쟁력 향상을 위한 방안을 모색하기 위해 마련되었다. 그랜드 하얏트 서울 호텔에서 진행된 이번 강연에는 암참 이사진을 포함하여 국내·외 기업 대표 등 100여명 이상이 참석했다.  

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 환영사를 통해, “공정경쟁 규제에 대한 비전을 공유하기 위해 오늘 이 자리에 함께 해 주신 한 위원장께 감사드린다.”고 말하며, “대한민국이 가진 아·태지역 비즈니스 허브로서의 잠재력 발현을 위해서는 국내·외 기업 모두에게 공정하고 투명한 경영 환경을 보장하는 것이 중요하다. 최근 암참 경영 환경 설문조사 결과에서도 확인할 수 있듯, 예측할 수 없는 규제 환경이 암참 회원사의 공통적 우려이기 때문.” 이라고 덧붙였다. 그는 이어, “이와 관련하여 온라인 플랫폼법 등 새로운 법안이나 정책을 수립·추진할 때 관련 업계와 충분한 시간을 갖고 투명하게 소통해 줄 것”을 요청했다.  

그는 또한, “암참은 앞으로도 한국 정부와 글로벌 재계 간의 가교 역할을 충실히 하며 활발한 소통을 지원해 나가겠다.”고 밝혔다.  

한기정 공정거래위원장은 올 해는 고물가·고금리 국면에서 경제주체의 어려움이 지속되고, 디지털 경제의 심화로 인해 보다 적극적인 정책대안 모색이 필요하다고 판단, ‘민생·혁신 지원하는 공정한 시장경제 구축’을 목표로 ▲역동경제 뒷받침하는 공정거래질서 확립, ▲중소기업·소상공인의 안정적 거래기반 구축, ▲소비자 권익이 보장되는 환경 조성, ▲대기업집단 제도의 합리적 운영 등 네 가지 핵심 과제를 추진할 계획이라고 설명했다.   

한기정 위원장은 끝으로, “올 한해 공정위는 민생 경제 안정과 시장 혁신의 기반이 되는 공정한 시장경제 시스템 구축을 위해 노력하겠다.”고 강조했다.
