AMCHAM Champions Women's Economic Empowerment In Celebration for International Women’s Day

Marking Historic Milestone of over 30% Female Representation on AMCHAM Board of Governors

March 06, 2024 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim), in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy Seoul, hosted an exclusive International Women’s Day luncheon today at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul.

With over 100 attendees, the event featured Joy M. Sakurai, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy Seoul, alongside two prominent women leaders from AMCHAM’s Board of Governors, Yoo Myoung-Soon, CEO of Citibank Korea, and Lee Cheeyoung, General Manager of Procter & Gamble Korea. The event provided a platform to showcase the unique personal journeys of each speaker and delve into strategies for boosting women’s economic empowerment.

AMCHAM recently announced its 2024 Board of Governors, over 30% of which is comprised of women. With 11 women serving out of 34 members (excluding Honorary Governors and Advisors), this leadership is the most diverse in the organization’s history. This underscores the organization's ongoing efforts to strengthen women’s economic empowerment and promote diversity and inclusion.

The event not only commemorated AMCHAM's remarkable achievement but also highlighted the continued efforts of AMCHAM and the U.S. Embassy Seoul to promote female leadership and strengthen women's economic empowerment in Korea. In addition to raising awareness about the importance of empowering women through its Women’s Leadership Committee, AMCHAM pledged to continue to drive greater representation of women leaders on the Board.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Promoting women’s economic empowerment is a key priority for AMCHAM. Now is the time to help establish Korea as a regional headquarters in Asia, and to turn this ambition into reality, it is crucial for Korea to maintain sustainable and inclusive economic growth, which requires a significant investment in advancing women’s economic empowerment.”

“AMCHAM will continue its dedicated efforts to cultivate the next generation of women leaders and facilitate the exchange of corporate governance best practices among member companies to contribute to inspiring inclusion in our respective spheres of influence.” He added.

Joy M. Sakurai, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy Seoul, said, “Women bring unique and critical skills to the workforce: adaptability, collaboration, and mentorship. Companies that take into account women’s own economic power and independence are likely to continue to grow— and can leverage this as an opportunity to stay ahead of the game.”

The centerpiece of the event was a 2:3 Fireside Chat, co-moderated by James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, and Christina Ahn, Co-chair of the AMCHAM Women’s Leadership Committee and Client Partner of Korn Ferry. Speakers Joy M. Sakurai from the U.S. Embassy Seoul, Myoung-Soon Yoo from Citibank Korea, and Cheeyoung Lee from Procter & Gamble Korea engaged in meaning in-depth discussions on various elements related to fostering positive change for a more inclusive society, such as overcoming challenges in male-dominated industries and the ‘motherhood penalty’ phenomenon.

주한미국상공회의소, 세계 여성의 날 맞아 여성의 경제적 역량 강화 선도 다짐

역대 최다인 30% 이상의 여성으로 구성된 이사진 구성하며 역사적 이정표 달성하기도

2024년 3월 06일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 ‘세계 여성의 날(3월 8일)’을 기념하여 주한미국대사관과 함께 오늘 오후 포시즌스 호텔 서울에서 특별 오찬 간담회를 개최했다.

100명이 넘는 참석자가 행사장을 가득 매운 가운데, 주한미국대사관 조이 사쿠라이 공관 차석과 암참 이사진의 두 여성 리더인 유명순 한국씨티은행장, 한국피앤지 이지영 대표가 패널 토론자로 참석하였다. 이번 특별 간담회는 각 여성 리더들이 지금의 자리에 오르기까지의 여정과 경험을 토대로 여성 경제적 역량 강화의 전략적 방안을 모색하기 위해 마련되었다.

암참은 올 초 30% 이상의 여성 이사진으로 구성된 2024년도 이사회 명단을 발표한 바 있다. 34명의 이사진 (Honorary Governors 및 Advisor 제외) 중 11명인 역대 최다 여성 리더의 합류로 암참은 다양성과 포용성을 겸비한 이사진을 구성하며 역사적인 이정표를 달성하게 되었다. 암참은 여성의 경제적 역량 강화의 필요성을 인지하고 이를 활성화하기 위해 다방면으로 노력해 오고 있다.

이번 행사를 통해 암참은 이러한 성과를 축하하는 한편, 암참과 주한미국대사관이 함께 힘을 모아 한국 內 여성 리더십을 촉진하고 여성의 경제적 역량 강화를 위해 꾸준한 노력을 이어갈 것이라 밝혔다. 이를 위해 암참은 ‘여성 리더십 분과위원회 (Women’s Leadership Committee)’를 통해 여성의 경제적 역량 강화의 중요성에 대한 인식을 높이고, 암참 이사진에 보다 많은 여성 리더가 활동할 수 있도록 지원할 것을 약속했다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 환영사를 통해 먼저, “여성의 경제적 역량 강화는 암참의 핵심 이니셔티브 중 하나.”라고 말하며, “대한민국은 지금 아시아의 지역본부로 발돋움할 적기를 맞이했다고 본다. 이 미션을 현실화하기 위해 지속 가능성과 포용성을 아우르는 경제 성장이 중요하다고 판단되는 바, 여성의 경제적 지위 향상이 반드시 수반되어야 한다.”고 말했다. 그는 이어, “암참은 앞으로도, 차세대 여성리더 양성과 회원사 간 기업지배구조 관련 우수사례 교류 활성화에도 꾸준한 노력을 기울이며, 더욱 포용적인 사회를 위해 힘쓸 것.” 이라고 덧붙였다.

조이 사쿠라이 주한미국대사관 공관 차석은 이어, “여성이 가진 높은 적응력, 협업 능력, 멘토링 등의 장점과 여성의 경제적 지위, 독립성 등을 잘 활용하는 기업일수록 성장 잠재력이 더 클 뿐 아니라, 무한 경쟁 체제에서 더욱 앞서갈 수 있다고 본다.” 고 말했다.

이번 행사의 백미는 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사와 암참 여성 리더십 위원회의 공동 의장이자 콘페리의 클라이언트 파트너인 크리스티나 안이 공동 좌장을 맡은 2:3 좌담 세션이었다. 주한미국대사관의 조이 사쿠라이 공관 차석, 유명순 한국씨티은행장, 한국피앤지 이지영 대표 등 저명한 여성 리더가 패널로 참석한 가운데 ‘남성 중심 산업에서의 도전’ 과 '마더후드(경력단절) 페널티' 현상 등 다양한 주제에 대해 의미 있고 심도 깊은 대화를 이어가며, 포용적인 사회를 위한 긍정적인 변화를 모색했다.
