AMCHAM & FKI Leads U.S. and Korean Companies in Dialogue with United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Katherine Tai - AMCHAM & FKI Co-hosts a Special Reception with USTR Ambassador Katherine Tai in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Seoul - November 20, 2021 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) and The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) co-hosted a special reception with United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Katherine Tai on November 20, 2021, at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. This special reception was designed to explore win-win opportunities for potential industrial cooperation between the U.S. and Korea, while strengthening the relationship. Ambassador Tai’s visit to Korea is part of her first trip to Asia as U.S. Trade Representative. With U.S. and Korean business leaders in attendance, Ambassador Tai emphasized the United States’ commitment to enhancing the bilateral relationship and highlighted the Biden-Harris Administration’s vision for developing an Economic Framework for the Indo-Pacific. The delegation also exchanged views on the U.S.-Korea economic partnership and how to strengthen cooperation in a global and regional context. AMCHAM to explore Concrete Measures for Implementing ESG strategies in terms of Sustainability - AMCHAM Sustainability Seminar 2021 - August 27, 2020 (Seoul) – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the Sustainability Seminar 2021 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Seoul today. Representatives from the Korean and U.S. governments, industries and academia joined the hybrid online and offline seminar to share their insight through presentations and panel discussions under the theme of “Practical Implementation and Action toward ESG.” The seminar aims to facilitate open and constructive dialogue on sustainable business practices. In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim remarked that with the emergence of ESG as a key component of business as well as President Moon Jae-in and President Joe Biden’s initiatives to achieve sustainable economic growth, there is now an urgent need to explore concrete measures for implementing ESG strategies in terms of sustainability. “This will lead to major partnership opportunities for U.S. and Korean companies in Korea and around the world,” he remarked. H.E. Ho-Young An, Vice Chairman of the Environment and Labor Committee of the National Assembly, highlighted, “ESG management is a new standard and survival strategy for companies, and the Korean government is pushing to revitalize green finance to meet its 2050 net-zero goal." He continued, "I hope the environmental success stories of foreign companies shared today will lead to communication opportunities between governments and businesses. The discussions during today’s seminar will help me strategize our post-carbon neutrality policy.” H.E. Choong-mo Yang, Administrator & Vice-Minister of Saemangeum Development and Investment Agency (SDIA) said, “The Korean government announced K-New Deal and the carbon neutralization plan last year, and Saemangeum is responding to the global ESG trend by establishing Smart Green Industrial Complex and 7GW renewable energy generation complex." He added, "Saemangeum will actively participate in realizing ESG values in line with the government.” Gregory Briscoe, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs at U.S. Embassy Seoul, remarks “As countries around the globe seek ways to mitigate the environmental impact, the U.S. industry is well-positioned to share their experience and expertise with our Korean partners in order to help them develop solutions to critical environmental concerns.” The seminar explored the sustainability initiatives and best practices of leading global companies in Korea. ChenFai Chung, Vice President & General Manager, North Asia of Emerson Automation Solutions delved into the Emerson sustainability framework: “Greening of, Greening by & Greening with.” President & CEO Your-Hyun Yun and Executive Vice President Kumjoo Huh of Kyobo Life Insurance discussed Kyobo Life’s focus on “human-centered stakeholder relationship management.” The seminar also covered potential challenges that companies could face and solutions they could utilize to adopt a stronger sustainability direction. Yonghee Yoon, Partner at Yulchon LLC, delivered a presentation on legal issues and strategies that corporations could utilize for ESG. Mark Porter, Vice President of Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, discussed the general global ESG standard and steps that companies are taking to achieve success sustainability. Professor Seungwan Kim at the Department of Electrical Engineering at Chungnam National University discussed the “2050 Net Zero Scenario” and a roadmap for R&D development. The highlight of the seminar was the panel discussion led by Yeyoung Susan Ji, Executive-Country Leader (Korea) and Marketing Director (Asia Pacific) of Baker Hughes including the speakers. I believe there is huge potential for more cooperation that will bring more trade, investments and high-quality jobs to both countries.” KGCCI Chairperson Hyun-Nam Park said: “KGCCI, celebrating its 40th anniversary, is witnessing the ever-growing importance of the Korean-German business relations. As of 2020, Korea is now the second largest export country to Germany in Asia-Pacific. We see an ever-stronger momentum now during the pandemic and in the international economic context.” KGCCI President and CEO Dr. Henkelmann pointed out: “The EU-Korean Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has had and still has a very positive impact on businesses in Korea and Germany. The 10th anniversary of the FTA would be very good occasion to engage in discussions on how to modernize it to make it even more beneficial for both sides.” Speaker Park and the two chamber heads discussed a range of potential measures to make Korea a more competitive destination for foreign businesses. In particular, the participants discussed the importance of aligning Korea’s relatively high corporate and individual tax rates and stringent labor regulations with peer markets in East Asia. They also shared suggestions to promote Korea’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery, including by facilitating travel for individuals who are fully vaccinated for COVID-19. In addition, the participants noted the strong potential for cooperation in the environment, social and corporate governance (ESG)-related initiatives. AMCHAM launched an ESG Committee and held the first U.S.-Korea ESG Seminar in May of 2021. The participants expressed keen interest in pursuing further cooperation to share and implement global best practices for ESG in Korea. AMCHAM Proposes Exemption from Mandatory 14-day Quarantine for Travelers Vaccinated in the U.S. May 20, 2021 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) submitted a letter today to the Korean government to request an exemption from or reduction of the mandatory 14-day quarantine for inbound travelers who have received their vaccinations in the U.S., similar to the exemption being given for those who received their vaccinations in Korea. The letter suggests that the Korean government can verify travelers’ vaccinations by requiring them to present certificates with their personal details as well as details about the medical facility at which they were vaccinated. This exemption can take the form of a reduced quarantine period from 14 days to 3 days, and may be implemented on a pilot basis with markets that have high rates of vaccination, such as the U.S., or even with designated cities or flights. AMCHAM believes that a quarantine exemption or reduction would facilitate a resumption of business travel that is important for continued foreign investment into Korea.
