AMCHAM Hosts a Luncheon with General Vincent K. Brooks, Commander of UNC/CFC/USFK

(국문은 아래 참조) ?January 10, 2018 ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted the AMCHAM General Membership Meeting (GMM) with General Vincent K. Brooks, Commander of United Nations Command (UNC)/Combined Forces Command (CFC)/United States Forces Korea (USFK), at the Grand Hyatt Seoul on January 10, 2018. In attendance were around 120 representatives from AMCHAM member companies and U.S. and Korean government officials. The event began with opening remarks by Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors, who welcomed attendees to AMCHAM’s first event of the year and outlined AMCHAM’s objectives for 2018. He closed remarks by thanking General Brooks for his efforts in securing stability on the Korean peninsula as well as the dedication of the servicemen and women protecting our nations under General Brooks’ leadership. Myung Chan Lee, Vice Chair of AMCHAM and Country Chief Executive of Lockheed Martin Global, Inc. ? Korea, greeted the attendees and delivered a New Year’s message. During his speech, General Brooks described important leadership lessons he received through his career. Highlighting important guidelines for leaders of all experience levels, he emphasized the need to lead by example and share the hardships and risks taken by the organization being led. He also stressed the need for leaders to not only continue self-improvement but also encourage the growth of their successors and delegate effectively. During the fireside chat, General Brooks and AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim addressed several topics such as the growth of Korea’s economy, the importance of family, and role models, among others. When asked about working with leaders worldwide, General Brooks explained that maintaining mutual respect and undergoing self-evaluation were key to effective communication and ultimately the achievement of goals. AMCHAM’s close dialogue with General Brooks served not only as an assurance of the U.S. ? New Leadership to Promote “Win-Win” Partnership Between U.S. and Korea

Cordani, President and CEO of Cigna Corporation, as the new Chairman of the U.S.-Korea Business Council (USKBC). On December 15, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce announced that Mr. Cordani will take over the USKBC chairmanship with the end of Qualcomm Executive Chairman Dr. Paul Jacobs’ post. USKBC was founded in 1988 as a business advocacy organization aiming to strengthen ties between the U.S. and Korea. With the active participation of prominent business executives, the Council is considered a major channel of economic collaboration between the two nations. “With the revisions of the Korea ? U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA), the role of USKBC has grown,” said James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM. “Through Chairman Cordani’s leadership, I am confident that we will be able to engage in a deeper discussion about the economic partnership between the two countries and establish a stronger platform for collaboration.” Since 2009, Chairman Cordani has provided insurance and healthcare services to thirty countries worldwide as President and CEO of Cigna Corporation. His special interest in the Korean market has grown with his annual visits to South Korea. The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted the AMCHAM General Membership Meeting (GMM) with His Excellency Kim Sang-jo, Chairman of the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC), at the Lotte Hotel Seoul on November 29, 2017. In attendance were around 100 representatives from AMCHAM member companies and government officials. The event began with opening remarks by James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, who introduced Chairman Kim and highlighted the importance of collaboration with the KFTC. “It is an honor that AMCHAM has this special and unique opportunity to listen to and share the various insights from the American business community,” he remarked. “We hope to collaborate with the KFTC and establish a ‘win-win’ understanding.” Chairman Kim delivered a speech about Korea’s recent economic situations and the role of KFTC. “The new government has decided to fundamentally change the economic paradigm to solve the structural problems,” he stated. “The role of the KFTC is more important than ever in creating a market environment that allows fair competition.” In the fireside chat that followed by his speech, Chairman Kim and Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors, discussed about various issues such as the business environment in Korea, consumer protection, 4th industrial revolution and the KORUS FTA. AMCHAM Helps Build Chung-Ang University Students into Global Business Leaders

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) held “The 12th AMCHAM Innovation Camp” in partnership with Human Resources Development Service of Korea (HRD Korea) at Chung-Ang University on November 17, 2017. The AMCHAM delegates, comprised of ten representatives from leading American and Korean companies, met with around 200 university students to share insight about how to improve their prospects in the global job market. The main event began with opening remarks by Chang-Soo Kim, President of Chung-Ang University, and James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, and congratulatory remarks by Soon Hwan Park, Acting President of HRD Korea. “Joining us today are leaders of prominent global firms who have pushed themselves to be successful,” said Chairman & CEO Kim. “They wish to help students who are also ready to challenge themselves and work in multinational companies, so I hope today will be helpful.” Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors and Partners for the Future Foundation Jeffrey Jones, who has led AMCHAM Innovation Camp since its launch, introduced the speakers and moderated the entire session. Session 1 included Michael Conlan (President of Amer Sports Korea Ltd.), James Jung-Hwon Chun (Country Representative Director at Enterprise Service Korea A DXC Technology Company), and Colm Flanagan (Head of School at Seoul Foreign School), who each delivered a presentation about skills necessary for success at global companies and planning successful careers in the future. In Session 2, each of the eight delegates met with smaller groups of students to have more personal conversations about entering the international work force. AMCHAM Addresses Risk Abatement Strategies for C-Suite Executives

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) will host the second annual “C-Suite Compliance and Risk Management Seminar” on November 7, 2017 at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. The first AMCHAM C-Suite Compliance and Risk Management Seminar in 2016 addressed the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, otherwise known as the “Kim Young-ran Law.” The seminar provided around 200 AMCHAM members and attendees a better understanding of various compliance and risk management issues impacting businesses in Korea. AMCHAM Collaborates with Korean Government on Job Creation

Presidential Committee on Jobs Policy Meeting on Employment and Investment Promotion” to discuss the promotion of job creation and foreign direct investment in Korea and sign the AMCHAM ? Presidential Committee on Jobs Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Employment and Investment Promotion. Leaders of iconic American businesses in Korea were able to voice the challenges faced by international corporations operating in Korea and explore options to improve the foreign business community in Korea. AMCHAM Explores Opportunities for Energy Collaboration between U.S. and Korea

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) in partnership with U.S. LNG portfolio company, NextDecade Corporation, held the U.S.?Korea Energy Cooperation Seminar on Monday, September 25 at Lotte Hotel Seoul. Representatives from the U.S. and Korean governments and the energy industry gathered to discuss the future of U.S.-Korea energy cooperation and explore potential areas of collaboration. The seminar is part of AMCHAM’s ongoing efforts to improve the U.S. goods trade deficit with Korea, one of the most important bilateral trade issues on which AMCHAM has played a significant role since the AMCHAM Doorknock visit to Washington D.C. earlier this year. At the AMCHAM Press Conference in June, Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors, suggested increasing Korea’s U.S. LNG imports as one of the measures the Korean government could implement to positively contribute to the ongoing talks on the U.S. ? Korea FTA. The seminar was opened by Jeffrey Jones, who described the U.S.’s position to contribute to Korea’s energy needs particularly as the 2nd largest importer of LNG in the world with the benefit of reducing Korea’s trade deficit with the U.S. AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim welcomed attendees, stating, “It is important for AMCHAM to explore ways in which the U.S. and Korea can collaborate in innovative ways to achieve win-win results, especially if it helps reduce the trade deficit.” H.E. Jang Byung-wan, Chairman of Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee of the National Assembly emphasized, “Korea must continue to import energy in a way that benefits from diversifying our sources from the Middle East to the U.S. This is one potential area of achieving a win-win strategy for both Korea and the U.S. The National Assembly is very interested in this option because we can improve the quality of life for Korean people and increase the proportion of clean energy sources in our energy mix.” Minister-Counselor for Commercial Affairs David Gossack of the U.S. Embassy in Seoul stated, “Through the bilateral energy security dialogue of both Korea and U.S., the U.S. government recognizes the importance of ensuring that Korea has a reliable energy supply. I hope our strong and lasting partnership will allow security for energy as well.” Key industry leaders, including representatives from KoGas, SK E&S, Hanyang Corporation, Baker Hughes, a GE company, Korea Energy Economics Institute and Hanyang University Center for Governance & Security delivered in-depth presentations on various topics to assure a safe, clean and competitive energy supply for Korea. Regarding Korea’s growing role in the energy industry in the Asia-Pacific region, Kathleen Eisbrenner, CEO of NextDecade Corporation expressed, “The U.S., through companies like NextDecade, is prepared to be an energy partner with Korea to ensure a cost competitive safe supply of LNG to support Korea's energy needs. This will provide for a diversity of supply at more competitive prices than currently available to Korea. AMCHAM Hosts the 11th AMCHAM Innovation Camp with eBay Korea at Ajou University

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) held “The 11th AMCHAM Innovation Camp” in partnership with eBay Korea at Ajou University on September 20, 2017. The AMCHAM delegates, comprised of eight representatives from leading American and Korean companies, met with around 100 university students from Ajou University to share insight about how to improve their prospects in the global job market. Prior to the event, Lee Joong Bok, eBay Korea’s Team Leader of the Cross-Border Trade (CBT) delivered a presentation on the topic of “Access to the Global Marketplace with eBay.” The presentation covered global and cross border e-commerce as well as opportunities for businesses to expand exports using online channels, such as eBay. The main event began with opening remarks by Acting President Hee Sug Ryu of Ajou University, as well as congratulatory remarks by James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, and O-Eun Lee, Head of Government Relations at eBay Korea. Mr. Lee stated, “I hope today’s lecture on online commerce will help nurture the young entrepreneurs towards the global market.” Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors and Foundation Chairman of Partners for the Future Foundation, began the first session of presentations by introducing the presenters.
