U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration and AMCHAM Korea Sign MOA to Promot…

April 11, 2019 ? A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) has been signed between the U. S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) and The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) to support export growth of U.S. small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to South Korea. This MOA signing is the first of its kind between ITA and a foreign-based American Chamber of Commerce for the specific purpose of expanding the number of U.S. small businesses exporting to another country. South Korea is currently the sixth largest trading partner in goods to the U.S. and is ably placed to support U.S. SMEs seeking an international market. “It is a pleasure to welcome AMCHAM Korea to the Department of Commerce as we work together on our mutual goal of increasing the number of U.S. small businesses that export,” said Under Secretary Gilbert Kaplan. “We are approached every day by small businesses, many of whom are not household names and are looking for ways to enter into new markets. Through this strategic partnership, we will have the opportunity to combine efforts and maximize investment for U.S. SMEs in Korea.” Through the ITA-AMCHAM Korea partnership, a "U.S.-Korea SME Center" will be established to support U.S. businesses with on-the-ground resources for information and solutions for entering the Korean market. The SME Center will also provide assistance in the areas of business, location, marketing, government procurement, and trade missions. AMCHAM Korea has set a target to reach 300 companies through the U.S.-Korea SME Center in the first year. “AMCHAM Korea is honored to work even more closely with our partners in the U.S. Government by assisting in the success of U.S. SMEs entering the Korean market,” said AMCHAM Korea Chairman & CEO James Kim. “There is tremendous potential for U.S. SMEs to play a bigger role in job creation, economic growth, and innovation in both countries and contribute to more balanced bilateral trade.” The MOA announced by Under Secretary Kaplan and President Kim lays the groundwork for advancing sustained year-on-year success through an increase in the number of U.S. SMEs exporting to Korea and the volume of U.S. SME exports to Korea. AMCHAM Hosts Special Luncheon with Seoul Mayor for the First Time in 10 Years

March 25, 2019 (Seoul) ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted a Special Luncheon with Mayor Park Won-soon of Seoul Metropolitan Government at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. They discussed policy measures for attracting and boosting foreign investment in the future. With around 100 AMCHAM members and government officials in attendance, this was AMCHAM’s first meeting with the mayor of Seoul in ten years. The last was a meeting with Mayor Oh Se-hoon in 2008. AMCHAM and the Seoul Metropolitan Government discussed challenges faced by U.S. companies entering Korea as well as ways to promote investment. AMCHAM Promotes Collaboration between Foreign Chambers of Commerce and Korean Government

November 30, 2018 (Seoul) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the AMCHAM Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2018 on November 30, 2018, at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. Around 150 distinguished guests, including officials from the U.S., Korean and European governments and CEOs of foreign companies, attended the event. The first of its kind, the seminar discussed various current issues in the Korean business environment and explored measures for facilitating increased foreign investment into Korea. The leaders of five major foreign chambers of commerce in Korea, including James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, Sean Blakeley, CEO of the British Chamber of Commerce in Korea (BCCK), Christoph Heider, President of the European Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ECCK), David-Pierre Jalicon, Chairman of the French Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI), and Barbara Zollman, President & CEO of the Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KGCCI), gathered to discuss issues such as the strengths of the Korean market, the Korean economic outlook, Korea’s regulatory environment, fair trade, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, labor regulations, and more. They signed a Joint Statement pledging to fully cooperate with the Korean government to resolve these issues in mutually beneficial ways. The Joint Statement also specified the foreign chambers’ willingness to promote innovation and increased investment in the Korean economy. In his congratulatory remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim highlighted that the purpose of the seminar is not only to elaborate on grievances but to explore collaborative opportunities in partnership with the Korean government. AMCHAM Signs Agreement on Commemorative Sculpture for Relocation of USFK

(한글은 아래 참조) ? July 3, 2018 (Seoul) ? On July 2, AMCHAM held a meeting with H.E. Song Young-moo, Minister of National Defense, and signed the “Agreement on the Construction of Commemorative Monument for the Relocation of U.S. Forces Korea to Pyeongtaek” with the Ministry of National Defense U.S. Forces Korea Base Relocation Office in honor of the strengthening of the Korea-U.S. alliance. Under the agreement, AMCHAM is set to launch the U.S.-ROK Alliance Support Committee, led by Myung Chan Lee, Country Chief Executive of Lockheed Martin Global, Inc., Korea. The committee will actively raise funds with domestic and foreign companies to contribute to the construction and installation of a sculpture commemorating USFK’s relocation to Pyeongtaek. The sculpture will be placed in front of the new USFK headquarters at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek in the second half of 2018. Kim You Geun, Chief Director of Ministry of National Defense U.S. Forces Korea Base Relocation Office, said, “The symbolic sculpture installed on the U.S. military base in Pyeongtaek will be a monument to the memory of the U.S.-Korea alliance that has been strong for the past 60 years.” James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, said, “The fund will show appreciation from the U.S. business community for both U.S.-Korea defense agencies, who have contributed greatly to the protection of peace on the Korean Peninsula and the U.S.-Korea alliance.” On June 29, Chairman & CEO Kim and Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors Jeffrey Jones were invited to the opening ceremony of Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek. AMCHAM is the largest foreign chamber in Korea. ### 암참, 주한미군 이전 기념 조형물 건립 합의서 체결 ?2018 년 7월 3일 - 주한미국상공회의소(이하 ‘암참’)는 지난 7월 2일 오전 국방부에서 송영무 대한민국 국방부 장관과 환담하고, 주한미군기지이전사업단과 한?미 동맹강화와 우호증진을 상징하는 조형물 설치를 위한 ‘주한미군 평택이전 기념 상징조형물 건립 합의서’를 체결했다. 이번에 체결된 합의서를 통해 암참은 한·?미 동맹강화위원회 (위원장: 이명찬 록히드마틴 한국지사장)를 발족하고, 관심 있는 국내?외 기업들이 조형물 제작과 설치를 지원할 수 있도록 적극적인 모금활동을 펼쳐 나갈 예정이다. 조형물은 모금에 참여한 국내·외 대표 기업들의 기부금을 기반으로 주한미군기지이전사업단이 발주해, 2018 년 하반기 평택 캠프 험프리스 내 새 주한미군사령부 앞에 설치될 예정이다. 김유근 국방부 주한미군기지이전사업단장은 “평택 미군기지에 설치되는 상징조형물은 주한미군의 평택시대를 맞이하여 지난 60년간 굳건히 이어온 한미 동맹을 기억할 수 있는 기념비적인 조형물이 될 것이다”라고 전했다. 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 “이번 모금사업을 통해 한반도 평화수호와 한?미 동맹에 큰 기여를 하고있는 양국 국방 기관은 물론 양국 장병의 노고에 대한 한?미 재계의 감사를 표할 수 있을 것”이라고 전했다. 한편 김 회장 겸 대표이사와 제프리 존스 암참 이사장은 지난 6월 29일 평택 캠프 험프리스 주한미군사령부 신청사 개관식에 초청되어 조형물이 설치될 장소를 둘러봤다.
