[News Article] Hyundai Motor chair marks 3rd year of record earnings

Hyundai Motor chair marks 3rd year of record earnings  By Byun Hye-jin, The Korea Herald - Hyundai Motor Group is expected to post record earnings this year, breaking its own record for the third year in a row since Executive Chair Chung Euisun took the helm of the world's third largest carmaker in 2020. Hyundai and its smaller affiliate Kia are projected to post 260.8 trillion won ($192.5 billion) and 26.6 trillion won in sales and operating profits this year, according to estimates by market tracker FnGuide. Both figures stand at an all-time high. Since Chung took up leadership, the auto giant’s yearly revenue surged 37 percent to 229.9 trillion won as of last year, while operating profits doubled to 17.5 trillion won during the same period. Last year, the carmaker also won the No. 3 title in the global automotive market, selling 6.85 million vehicles. In the January-September period this year, it sold over 5.48 million vehicles, an 8 percent jump from a year ago. Its premium Genesis brand, in particular, hit the 1 million mark in global sales, a feat for the carmaker that had long been considered a quality, budget car brand. Industry watchers agree that Hyundai’s stellar performance is the outcome of Chung’s aggressive business strategy to diversify its product lineup, ranging from cost-effective cars to value-added futuristic models. Chung is especially credited with leading the launch of the Genesis brand in 2015, recruiting top designers from Bentley. Under the ambitious goal to sell over 2 million electric cars worldwide by 2030, Chung has more recently made a big push for clean mobility. Although Hyundai and Kia cars became ineligible to receive EV subsidies following Washington’s Inflation Reduction Act, the carmaker expanded the electric car lease business to secure footing in the all-important US market. It also vowed to speed up the construction of an EV manufacturing plant in Georgia within the next year. In the third quarter, Hyundai and Kia’s eco-friendly cars, including hybrid and battery-powered car sales in the US, skyrocketed 93 percent and 95.4 percent to a record-high of 46,794 units and 33,305 units, respectively. Bold investments in future technology show Chung’s commitment to making Hyundai Motor Group a prime mover in mobility innovation. Under a 1-trillion-won deal, the auto giant acquired American robotics company Boston Dynamics in June 2021. Last year, it invested a total of 1.45 trillion won and added a new subsidiary called 42dot, an autonomous vehicle startup in Korea, in a move to boost its software-defined vehicle business. But Hyundai chairman’s push to defend the world’s top 3 title is not without challenges. The company said it needs a breakthrough in the Chinese business that has been dwindling ever since 2017, a year after when China started to take retaliatory measures against Korea for its decision to deploy a US-made missile defense system. Of the five production bases in China, Hyundai has either sold or plans to sell off three manufacturing plants in Beijing, Chongqing and Changzhou. After improving the production efficiency of the remaining two plants, it looks to focus on manufacturing profitable Genesis cars and SUVs. “We also plan to roll out cost-competitive and high-quality electric cars in China, one of the largest EV markets and restore our reputation there,” said the company official. Improving corporate culture is another pressing issue for the company as it seeks to welcome new ideas and boost work performance. The chairman stressed in his New Year's message that he will make efforts to overhaul the status quo and build a progressive and flexible working environment. “Compared to his father Chung Mong-koo (the honorary chairman), Chung has shown a more open (style of) leadership by joining hands with automotive software and chip companies to adapt to the fast-evolving mobility market,” said Kim Pil-su, a car engineering professor at Daelim University. “He has expanded Hyundai’s global presence with internal combustion engine cars and the Genesis brand, and is creating a strong foothold as the first mover in the EV market.” Source: https://news.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20231010000669

[News Article] Samsung SDI, Stellantis to build $4 billion battery plant in Indiana

Samsung SDI, Stellantis to build $4 billion battery plant in Indiana   BY SARAH CHEA, Korea JoongAng Daily - Samsung SDI’s $4 billion second battery plant with Stellantis will be located in Indiana, the Korean battery maker said Wednesday. The EV battery plant will be located in Kokomo, Indiana, where the two companies' first joint factory is situated.  The two parties announced the investment plan in July but did not name the location at the time.  The plant will have 34 gigawatt-hours of production capacity, which is enough to make around 450,000 EVs per year. The two companies will spend a total of $3.9 billion in the plant, with SDI owning 51 percent.  Production will begin in early 2027.  The city of Kokomo is where Samsung SDI has its first battery plant with Stellantis.  Samsung SDI and Stellantis set up a joint U.S. venture, StarPlus Energy, last year and are building a $2.5 billion battery plant in Indiana. The plant is scheduled to start operations in 2025 with 33 gigawatt-hours of capacity. With the latest announcement, the two companies' total capacity will boost to 67 gigawatt-hours of capacity, around 900,000 EVs. "With the second factory, Samsung SDI will be able to secure our biggest battery manufacturing site in the North America," said Samsung SDI CEO Choi Yoon-ho. "We anticipate Stellantis EVs installed with SDI's super-gap batteries will advance U.S.'s shift to the EV era."  Samsung SDI in June also said it will jointly invest at least $3 billion with General Motors (GM) to build a battery plant in Indiana. The plant in New Carlisle, Indiana, aims to have an annual production capacity of 30 gigawatt-hours that could be used to manufacture 300,000 EVs. Samsung SDI's production capacity is expected to grow at an annual rate of 30 percent to reach 230 gigawatt-hours by 2026.  Of the 230 gigawatt-hours of capacity, 97 will be coming from the North American region. Source:https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/2023-10-11/business/industry/Samsung-SDI-Stellantis-to-build-4-billion-battery-plant-in-Indiana/1887691

[News Article] POSCO pledges to support Ukraine's post-war reconstruction

POSCO pledges to support Ukraine's post-war reconstruction   By Lee Min-hyung, The Korea Times - POSCO Group Chairman Choi Jeong-woo has pledged to support the reconstruction of Ukraine by operating a range of projects in areas such as energy and infrastructure, so that the nation can overcome the devastation the war wreakedon it in a timely manner. Choi displayed his willingness during a meeting with a delegation from Ukraine’s parliament. The delegation included Ukrainian lawmakers, Andriy Nikolayenko and Serhiy Taruta, and Ukrainian Ambassador to South Korea Dmytro Ponomarenko. "The South Korean government is committed to supporting Ukraine's reconstruction efforts, and Korean companies, such as POSCO Group, are actively participating in this effort,” Choi said. “The partnership between our two countries will be further strengthened. POSCO Group will consolidate all its capabilities to initiate reconstruction projects as soon as possible." In March, the steelmaker launched the so-called Ukraine Reconstruction Taskforce, and it is standing at the forefront for a possible series of rebuilding projects for the country in five areas: steel, food, secondary battery materials, energy and infrastructure. The company is also set to accelerate humanitarian cooperation by engaging in education-based projects for the country, it said. In the field of steel, POSCO aims to engage in various forms of cooperation, including energy production for steel manufacturing through Ukraine's steel reconstruction program. POSCO International has also been expanding the sales volume of grain terminals operated in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, since 2019, as part of its efforts to provide more food support there. POSCO Group is considering expanding business ties with Ukrainian firms in the areas of secondary battery materials and energy. Both countries plan to explore ways to utilize steel modular houses there, as this can dramatically shorten construction periods. Modular construction is an innovative way to cut construction periods by up to 60 percent from conventional ones, and is good for the environment, as it allows reuse and recycling. Modular buildings are prefabricated in factories and quickly assembled on site. POSCO is also running a special student exchange program for university students there. Selected students can gain an opportunity to study at the Pohang University of Science and Technology for a year. Source: https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/tech/2023/10/419_360746.html
